Electronic properties and surface potential evaluations at the protein nano-biofilm/oxide interface: Impact on corrosion and biodegradation

Ehsan Rahimi et al.

Summary: This study discusses the influence of a protein nano-biofilm on the electronic behavior of metals or oxide biomaterials and its impact on subsequent interactions such as corrosion and biodegradation. The results show that the protein nano-biofilm hinders charge transfer at the protein/electrolyte interface due to lower electrical surface potential and surface charge distribution. Additionally, the albumin protein increases the magnitude of space charge capacitance and the number of n-type charge carriers, leading to the acceleration of metal ion release and metal-protein complex formation.

Effect of hydrogen peroxide on bovine serum albumin adsorption on Ti6Al4V alloy: A scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy study

Ehsan Rahimi et al.

Summary: Protein adsorption on the surface of implant materials is greatly influenced by the presence of H2O2, which disrupts the formation of dense protein networks. The addition of H2O2 results in a thin and discontinuous protein layer on the Ti6Al4V alloy surface, reducing the total surface potential difference. This study provides new insights into protein adsorption on metallic substrates in biomaterials research.

Corrosion mechanisms of magnetic microrobotic platforms in protein media

Ehsan Rahimi et al.

Summary: The field of biomedical small-scale swimmers has made significant progress, but faces challenges in terms of durability and corrosion resistance in complex body fluids. A study on the corrosion mechanism of a widely used design in magnetic microrobots revealed that while gold coatings enhance surface nobility and resistance to corrosion, their intrinsic defects can lead to galvanic coupling with the substrate. Coordination of protein with the substrate further accelerates corrosion, but a phosphate-based layer acts as a barrier to metal release after prolonged immersion.
