Near-field spectroscopy of Dirac plasmons in Bi2Se3 ribbon arrays

Lucy L. L. Hale et al.

Summary: Plasmons supported by massless electron surface states in topological insulators (TIs), known as Dirac plasmons, have promising applications in optoelectronics. However, studying Dirac plasmons is challenging due to their confinement to the surface. In this study, aperture near-field spectroscopy was used to investigate localized terahertz (THz) Dirac plasmon resonances in Bi2Se3 ribbon arrays. The combination of THz time-domain spectroscopy and aperture near-field microscopy allowed for sampling of localized Dirac plasmons and mapping of their dispersion, revealing a coupled plasmon-phonon polariton interaction. Aperture near-field spectroscopy provides valuable information for the understanding and development of real-world TI devices.

Terahertz nanospectroscopy of plasmon polaritons for the evaluation of doping in quantum devices

Xiao Guo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of nanoscale THz plasmon polaritons as an indicator of surface quality in prototypical quantum devices properties. By utilizing THz near-field hyperspectral measurements, polaritonic features in doped silicon near a metal-semiconductor interface were observed. A multilayer extraction procedure was applied to quantitatively probe the doped surface layer and determine its thickness and complex permittivity. The results matched the dielectric conditions necessary to support the THz surface plasmon polariton. Additionally, it was shown that etching of this doped layer leads to an increase in the quality factor of superconducting resonators as determined by cryogenic measurements.

Summary: This study successfully captures and analyzes the properties and dispersion of plasmon polaritons in thin Bi2Se3 layers using THz near-field imaging technique. The results show that the momentum and decay time of polaritons significantly increase compared to photons, but the propagation length is short. The study further reveals the coupling process between THz radiation and Dirac and Massive carriers on the surface of topological insulators and carriers and photons in the bulk.
