The author enjoys spending time with their family in retirement and emphasizes the importance of staying active and connected. Mentoring, editing, and documenting family history are also meaningful activities for the author. The author misses the interactions with colleagues but believes retirement can be greatly enjoyed with proper preparation.
What I have enjoyed most in my retirement of 4 years has been spending more time with my wife, children, and grandchildren, while living on Sanibel island in Southwest Florida. I have ample time to run, exercise, bike, and play golf, all of which Betsy and I often do together. Most of what I have read about getting older focuses on staying active, both physically and mentally to stay healthy. I have been fortunate to remain connected to Johns Hopkins through the Academy and the Division of Cardiac Surgery. I have time to mentor and continue as one of the senior editors of the STS e-book. I also started a family chronicle that includes memorabilia which is meant for our kids and grandkids. I am often asked if I miss work? Although I loved each one of my roles at Johns Hopkins over the 37 years, I miss most my interactions with my friends and colleagues at the hospital and health system.I think if you adequately prepare and create a type of glide path for retirement, you and your spouse will greatly enjoy retirement years!
