Somaclonal Variation-Advantage or Disadvantage in Micropropagation of the Medicinal Plants

Georgiana Duta-Cornescu et al.

Summary: Cell and tissue plant cultures are widely used in conservation and multiplication of species, especially for economically important plants. In vitro technologies have been developed for medicinal plants to produce secondary metabolites and pathogen-free plants. However, caution must be taken to balance maintaining genetic fidelity while exploring somaclonal variations for useful traits. This review focuses on somaclonal variations in medicinal plants from the perspectives of cytogenetics, genetics, and epigenetics, with emphasis on the subtle changes at the genetic and epigenetic level using DNA markers.

Overview of the Success of In Vitro Culture for Ex Situ Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Endemic and Subendemic Native Plants of Romania

Ana-Maria Radomir et al.

Summary: Romania has a high diversity of plant species, but their extinction rate has increased due to uncontrolled harvesting, climate change, and ecological collapse. The national Red List of Romanian flora includes 1453 threatened taxa, many of which have high ornamental, medicinal-cosmetic, and/or aromatic properties. It is important to cultivate these plants in a controlled environment for effective conservation.

Micropropagation of Endemic Endangered Taxa of the Italian Flora: Adenostyles alpina subsp. macrocephala (Asteraceae), as a Case Study

Valeria Gianguzzi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop an efficient micropropagation protocol for Adenostyles by evaluating the effect of different plant growth regulators on leaf explants. The results showed that the medium containing 3 mg L-1 of BAP and 1 mg L-1 of NAA in MS medium had the highest percentage of callus induction and increased shoot regeneration. The regenerated shoots showed more effective root induction in the hormone-free MS medium and in the presence of IBA at concentrations of 0.25, 0.50, and 1 mg L-1.

Critical Role of Regrowth Conditions in Post-Cryopreservation of In Vitro Plant Germplasm

Elena Popova et al.

Summary: This article discusses the five major strategies available at the regrowth stage for improving plant material performance after cryopreservation, including physical and chemical factors. These strategies can help choose the most suitable regrowth conditions for plant germplasm to be cryopreserved, and propose combinations of factors that may benefit the recovery of cryopreservation-sensitive species and types of materials.

Asexual Propagation of Greek Salvia officinalis L. Populations Selected for Ornamental Use

Christos Nanos et al.

Summary: In this study, 12 native sage populations in north-west Greece were evaluated for their ornamental traits, and populations from Aristi, Kefalovryso, and Igoumenitsa were selected for their best performance and investigated for their asexual propagation through shoot cutting and in vitro techniques. The results showed that Aristi had the highest rooting performance in spring by applying 0.5 g/L IBA and had the highest number of newly formed shoots and shoot length in the in vitro propagation. Aristi also showed potential as a competitive ornamental variety.

Investigation of the Effects of the Explant Type and Different Plant Growth Regulators on Micropropagation of Five Mediterranean Salvia spp. Native to Greece

Maria Papafotiou et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop micropropagation protocols for five Mediterranean sage species, including Salvia fruticosa, S. officinalis, S. ringens, S. tomentosa, and S. pomifera ssp. pomifera, in order to facilitate their use in the pharmaceutical and floriculture industries. The most efficient species for shoot multiplication was S. officinalis, and optimal hormone concentrations were determined for each species. Successful acclimatization was achieved on peat-perlite substrate. The study provided efficient micropropagation protocols for these Mediterranean sage species, enabling breeding programs and promoting their use in the floriculture and pharmaceutical industries.

Stefanos Kostas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the morphological traits of seven wild-grown rosemary populations in Greece and focused on the propagation of two selected populations with desirable ornamental characteristics. Shoot cuttings and in vitro cultures were used for propagation, and different conditions and mediums were tested for rooting and shoot formation. The research successfully achieved rosemary plantlets with roots formed in vitro and acclimatized them in a greenhouse environment.
