Artificial intelligence-based fiber optic sensing for soil moisture measurement with different cover conditions

Xi-Feng Liu et al.

Summary: Actively heated fiber Bragg grating (AH-FBG) can be used for quasi-distributed monitoring of soil water content, but the analysis method needs improvement to minimize measurement errors. In this study, an artificial intelligence method is proposed and tested using a model to explore the influence of different cover conditions. The highest accuracy in water content measurements based on maximum temperature increase is achieved with grass cover, followed by bare soil, and the worst accuracy is with biochar mixed soil. Fluctuation in heat power and longitudinal heat transfer are the main sources of measurement errors. Artificial neural network (ANN) models can effectively improve monitoring accuracy by considering cover conditions that influence initial ground temperatures and water content gradients.

Development and application of a borehole stress meter in rocks surrounding the roadway, based on optical-fiber sensing technology

Xiaoping Xie et al.

Summary: The stress in rock masses is an important parameter for underground engineering design and construction. However, the current monitoring technology for coal mine roadway surrounding rocks in China lacks intelligence and a systematic approach, as well as high-precision sensing instruments and multi-functional monitoring systems. In this study, a mechanical model of rocks surrounding a borehole was constructed, and the interaction between the rocks and the borehole stress meter was analyzed. Two types of borehole stress meters using fiber Bragg grating were designed and compared in laboratory tests. The field application of the cystic-structure fiber Bragg grating (CS-FBG) borehole stress meter in the testing of a coal mine roadway showed significant stress growth and stress peak zones, with four stages of stress change: rapid rise, uniform growth, rapid rise to the peak, and rapid decline. The CS-FBG borehole stress meter proved to be reasonable in design, and the field monitoring achieved the expected effect.

Characterization of sliding surface deformation and stability evaluation of landslides with fiber-optic strain sensing nerves

Hong -Hu Zhu et al.

Summary: Deformation monitoring using fiber-optic strain sensing cables is important for studying the evolution stages and triggering factors of landslides. However, the interaction between the cables and surrounding geomaterials during shearing is not well understood. This study presents an analytical methodology to interpret the cable-soil interaction and calculates the shear displacements of critical interfaces in landslides. The proposed method is validated through laboratory shear tests and applied to the Majiagou landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir region, China. The study establishes empirical relationships between measured strains and factors of safety, showing that water level drawdown and rainfall accelerate shear deformation of the landslide.

Effects of Electrodes Layout and Filler Scale on Percolation Threshold and Piezoresistivity Performances of a Cementitious-Based Geocomposite

Mohammadmahdi Abedi et al.

Summary: This study conducted an extensive experimental investigation on the combined effects of surface area, distance between electrodes, and filler scales on the percolation threshold of piezoresistive cement-stabilised sand. The results showed that changes in matrix dimensions had a significant impact on the electrical percolation threshold, with length changes having a greater effect than width and thickness changes. Increasing the aspect ratio of conductive fillers led to a reduction in the percolation threshold. The study also demonstrated the adequacy of using numerical relations to predict the percolation threshold and design self-sensing geocomposites.
