Temperature distribution modeling of PV and cooling water PV/T collectors through thin and thick cooling cross-fined channel box

Mohamed R. Gomaa et al.

Summary: Designing a Photovoltaic/Thermal (PV/T) system under high performance involves considering thermal, economic, and reliability challenges. PV/T systems are more effective in locations with high irradiance compared to standard PV systems. An optimal cooling system is necessary to eliminate excess heat from a PV/T system and improve the temperature of PV modules, which directly affects overall performance. This study focuses on a new, economically viable, and simplified cooling box for PV/T systems, analyzing the effects of irradiance levels and cooling water flow rates on cell temperature and output cooling water temperature. The study utilized finite element-based software (ANSYS 19.2) to numerically solve the problem in a three-dimensional model. The results showed that increasing the cooling fluid flow rate reduces the average surface temperature distribution and outlet cooling water temperature for both thin and thick box heat exchangers, with an ideal flow rate of 3 L/min. The average surface temperature and water-cooling temperature for the thin box heat exchanger were 30.7°C and 38.9°C, respectively, while for the thick box heat exchanger, they were 30.8°C and 32.4°C, respectively, under solar irradiance of 1000 W/m(2) and optimal flow rate.

Effect of PCM and porous media/nanofluid on the thermal efficiency of microchannel heat sinks

Somayeh Davoodabadi Farahani et al.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the thermal behavior and hydraulic performance of a conventional microchannel heat sink (MCHS) through the use of porous material, phase change material (PCM), and nanofluid. The findings show that for a critical thickness of the porous substrate, the thermal performance reaches a minimum point. Increasing values of Darcy number, porosity coefficient, nanoparticle diameter, and PCM thickness lead to a decrease in the thermal performance of MCHS. A square geometry MCHS demonstrates superior thermal performance compared to other geometries, and the use of porous material, nanofluid, and PCM results in improved thermal behavior compared to a conventional microchannel.
