Government environmental protection subsidies, environmental tax collection, and green innovation: evidence from listed enterprises in China

Zhangsheng Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of environmental protection subsidies and environmental tax collection on green innovation in Chinese manufacturing companies. The findings indicate a positive linear relationship between environmental protection subsidies and green innovation, while the relationship between environmental tax collection and green innovation shows a U-shaped pattern of inhibition followed by promotion. The study also reveals that the market-expected performance gap and market competition moderate and reinforce green innovation in enterprises.

Exploring the role of environmental regulation on energy security: Contextual findings for sustainable development in Chinese provinces

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: Recently, the issue of energy security has gained increased attention due to the reduction of energy resources and the emergence of problems such as unreasonable use. Investigating the relationship between environmental regulation and energy security is important to ensure energy security and promote national economic transformation. This study empirically analyzes the direct and spillover effects of environmental regulation on energy security, as well as the spatial heterogeneity and non-linear characteristics driven by fiscal decentralization and marketization. The results show regional differences and spatial dependence in China's energy security, and suggest that the positive impact of environmental regulation is enhanced when certain thresholds of fiscal decentralization and marketization are crossed. Relevant policy recommendations are also provided.

Analysis and modeling of innovation factors to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources- Evidence from European Union enterprises

Maciej Zastempowski

Summary: In recent years, a substantial amount of research has focused on the determinants of eco-innovations. However, most studies have analyzed eco-innovation at a general level. This paper investigates the key factors driving European Union enterprises to create innovations with environmental benefits, specifically focusing on the replacement of fossil fuel energy with renewable energy sources. Using a logistic regression model, the analysis of microdata from thirteen European Union Member States reveals that factors such as the high cost of energy, environmental regulations, government grants, and market demand positively impact the introduction of innovations replacing fossil fuel energy.

A novel stochastic semi-parametric frontier-based three-stage DEA window model to evaluate China's industrial green economic efficiency

Fangmei Liu et al.

Summary: This study develops a new stochastic semi-parametric frontier-based three-stage DEA model that considers the problem of functional form and multicollinearity. The model incorporates the effects of external environmental factors and statistical noise on efficiency and uses the StoNED approach and quasi-likelihood estimation method to estimate parameters. Monte Carlo experiments demonstrate that the new frontier provides more realistic and accurate efficiency measures. An empirical analysis evaluates green economic efficiency in China, comparing different models and showing significant differences caused by external environmental factors. The results have practical implications for the harmonious development of industrial production and a green economy in China.

Environmental tax reform and environmental investment: A quasi-natural experiment based on China's Environmental Protection Tax Law

Guangqiang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of China's environmental tax implementation on firms' environmental investments using Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2019. The results show a significant increase in firms' environmental investments after the implementation of the tax. The positive effect is more significant for state-owned companies and companies subject to high media attention, but there is no obvious difference between companies in regions with different levels of economic development. Further analysis reveals that government subsidies negatively affect firms' environmental investments, but the environmental tax reduces such subsidies and thus increases firms' environmental investments. Additionally, the results show that the environmental tax promotes firms' performance through increased environmental investments.
