Giovanni Sgubin et al.

Summary: Evaluating the potential climatic suitability for premium wine production is crucial for adaptation planning in Europe. This study analyzes the future evolution of wine production in Europe under different global warming scenarios. The results suggest that the level of global warming largely determines the distribution of future wine regions, and adaptation measures become more challenging as global warming increases.

Bioclimatic Characterization Relating to Temperature and Subsequent Future Scenarios of Vine Growing across the Apulia Region in Southern Italy

Giovanni Gentilesco et al.

Summary: Climate change has a direct impact on the quantity and quality of grapes, especially through the influence of air temperature. A study conducted in the Apulia winegrowing region of southern Italy examined three bioclimatic indices based on temperature to classify the climate and predict its evolution under different future scenarios. The results showed that under the most likely and mildest scenario, certain areas in Apulia could still support quality viticulture, while the highly unlikely scenario indicated a significant decline in suitable areas for grape cultivation.

Effect of Drought on the Future Sugar Content of Wine Grape Varieties till 2100: Possible Adaptation in the Hungarian Eger Wine Region

Laszlo Lakatos et al.

Summary: The increase in sugar content of grapes due to rising temperatures poses the most significant risk for viticulture, leading to wines with higher alcohol content. Excessively high alcohol content can reduce marketability and profitability. This study examines the impact of expected drought on sugar content in Southern and Central Europe using the dryness index. Results show a decrease in the probability of maximum sugar content for most grape varieties in the near future, but a likelihood of an increase in the distant future. Regulated deficit irrigation can significantly reduce the probability of maximum sugar content.

The impact of climate change on the sustainability of wine production and the structure of its consumption in Czechia

Aleksandre Petriashvili et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of climate change on the structure of wine production and consumption in the Czech Republic, particularly in relation to the growing popularity of white wine consumption. However, the current preferences of Czech wine consumers, which favor white wines, do not align with the assumption that vine varieties suitable for the production of red wines will become more prevalent due to climate change.

Mapping the impact of recent climate change on viticultural potential in Romania

Cristian Valeriu Patriche et al.

Summary: Climate change impacts viticulture differently in various countries. Romania, an important wine-producing country, has seen an expansion of suitable areas for grape cultivation in the past decades. The potential for white wines has migrated to higher elevations and latitudes, while the potential for red wine production has increased at lower elevations. Producers may need to adapt by introducing new grape varieties and technological changes.

A study on the effects of climate change on viticulture on Santorini Island

Efstratios Guillaume Xyrafis et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean basin is one of the regions most affected by climate change, and the viticulture in this region is facing challenges of high temperatures and drought. This study analyzes climate data from Santorini Island and finds that the average annual temperature has increased by almost 4 degrees C in the past 45 years, with a significant increase in high-temperature days. The bioclimatic indicators also show a warmer and drier climate. High temperatures during critical stages of vine development seem to affect production in the following growing season, and earlier harvest dates and higher sugar content have been observed compared to 45 years ago.

Downscaling of climate change scenarios for a high-resolution, site-specific assessment of drought stress risk for two viticultural regions with heterogeneous landscapes

Marco Hofmann et al.

Summary: Extended periods without precipitation can result in water deficit and yield and quality losses for grape and wine production. Irrigation infrastructure in these regions is largely nonexistent. Climate models project changes in precipitation amounts and patterns, indicating a potential increase in similar situations in the future. A water balance model was developed to assess the impact of climate change on grapevine water budgets. The model considers factors such as soil water storage capacity, evapotranspiration, and viticultural management practices. Simulation results suggest that drought stress risk varies between vineyard sites and may increase in steep-slope regions in the future.
