Effects of driving factors at multi-spatial scales on seasonal runoff and sediment changes

Guoce Xu et al.

Summary: This study quantified the effects of different driving forces on runoff and sediment variations in four watersheds in the Qinling Mountains, China. The results showed that vegetation coverage and land-use changes were the main factors influencing runoff and sediment variations, and these factors varied at different spatial and temporal scales. Therefore, effective regulation of runoff and sediment requires considering the multi-scale differences in driving factors and their relationships.

Spatio-Temporal Patterns of NDVI and Its Influencing Factors Based on the ESTARFM in the Loess Plateau of China

Xinyi Fan et al.

Summary: The Loess Plateau is ecologically vulnerable, and vegetation is crucial for ecological improvement. Studying the distribution and influencing factors of vegetation is significant for ecological construction in the region. By fusing GIMMS NDVI and MODIS NDVI, we established high-resolution NDVI data and analyzed its variation in response to topography, climate, and human activities. The results showed a positive trend in NDVI over the past 31 years, with temperature having a greater impact than precipitation. Human activities contributed more than climatic factors to NDVI change, with implementation of the Grain-for-Green Program and provincial capital cities playing significant roles. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for assessing environmental stewardship and optimizing ecological restoration measures.

Ecological Security Patterns at Different Spatial Scales on the Loess Plateau

Liangguo Lin et al.

Summary: The study of ecological security patterns (ESPs) is crucial for enhancing ecosystem services and promoting ecological protection and socio-economic development. This study focused on ESPs on the Loess Plateau as an integral part of the national security strategic pattern. Using remote sensing data, ESPs were identified at different spatial scales, and the similarities and differences of ecological sources, corridors, and strategic points were analyzed. The results can inform the development of ecological protection strategies and the implementation of macro and micro level plans. Factors like human activities and land use types were found to influence the distribution of corridors, pinch points, and barrier points. It is important to consider the spatial scale when formulating ecological protection strategies and to design specific programs based on ESP characteristics to maximize biodiversity and ecosystem integrity.

Spatiotemporal Changes in NDVI and Its Driving Factors in the Kherlen River Basin

Shan Yu et al.

Summary: Vegetation is crucial for linking various environmental factors and plays a significant role in climate change adaptation and sustainable development. However, little is known about vegetation vulnerability and its driving mechanisms. Therefore, a study was conducted to analyze temporal and spatial changes in vegetation and the factors influencing these changes in the Kherlen River Basin using remote sensing data. The results indicate that the long-term normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) remained stable in the basin, with a significant mutation period from 2013 to 2017. The key factors affecting NDVI in the basin were temperature and precipitation, which directly influenced the local vegetation. The findings contribute to a better understanding of vegetation change mechanisms and can inform ecological policy-making.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Heterogeneity of Vegetation Phenology in the Yangtze River Delta

Cancan Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the phenology change characteristics of the Yangtze River Delta and explores its spatiotemporal heterogeneity and driving factors. The results show that the start of season (SOS) has a insignificant advancement, while the end of season (EOS) is significantly delayed. The spatial differences in phenological index do not strictly follow the change rules of latitude, and there is a divergent response of EOS with elevation grades. Land cover type is a major factor of the spatial heterogeneity of phenology, and nighttime land surface temperature (NLST) has a relatively larger contribution to the spatial heterogeneity in non-core urban areas.

Summary: This study monitored the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation cover in the Mu Us Sandy Land between 2000 and 2019 using NDVI data, revealing significant improvement in vegetation cover in the eastern and southeastern regions. The overall trend of vegetation improvement was spatially consistent, with high coverage in the east and south, and low coverage in central and western regions. The study also found a correlation between NDVI and precipitation, as well as NDVI and temperature, with precipitation having a stronger positive correlation across 99% of the Sandy Land. Additionally, human activities contributed 62.68% to vegetation improvement, while climate change contributed 37.32%.
