Experimental results show that the thermal efficiency of ethanol fuel significantly increases under excess air ratios higher than 1.8, while combustion losses increase. The challenging requirements to achieve lean-burn combustion with lower exhaust gas temperatures and higher intake boost pressures are assessed through an exergy analysis of the turbocharging system.

Optical measurements of two cylindrical and conical heavy-duty diesel injector nozzels-A comparison of reference diesel, HVO, and RME fuels

Summary: In this study, a constant volume/constant pressure combustion chamber was used to measure the major parameters of vapour/liquid phases and combustion of fuel spray introduced by two heavy-duty, large-diameter diesel injectors. The results show that the conical nozzle and cylindrical nozzle have notable impacts on the formation of the mixture, air entrainment process, and combustion behavior. Various parameters were combined to describe the spray characteristics in an inert background gas and explain the combustion trend of the nozzles in a reactive gas background. Optical techniques were employed to observe the spray and combustion behaviors under different conditions. The findings provide insights into the jet and liquid spray behaviors, as well as the combustion characteristics of the nozzles.

Aging analysis of alternative fuels and biofuels in a novel test rig

A novel test rig was designed to simulate real conditions and achieve knowledge gain for fuel aging and additive technology development. The results showed that pure FAME performed well in the realistic setup due to its high polarity preventing deposit accumulation. Insightful information with minimal effort and sample volume was obtained through benchtop 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Conventional fuel and FAME blends were found to lead to system failures and large quantities of deposits.
