Developing a micrositing methodology for floating photovoltaic power plants

M. S. Korkmaz et al.

Summary: One of the most impressive applications of renewable energy is the use of floating photovoltaic (FPV) power plants. However, determining the best locations for installing these facilities is a significant challenge. Currently, there is a lack of a standardized methodology for evaluating optimal deployment locations for FPV systems worldwide. This study analyzed three essential natural constraints, including solar irradiance, wind speed, and wave height, over a reservoir in southwestern Turkey to identify suitable sites for FPV installation. The results provide a new methodology, called FPV Convenient Reservoir Surface (FPV-CRS), which includes essential guidelines for micrositing FPV facilities.

Sizing Methodology of Floating Photovoltaic Plants in Dams of Semi-Arid Areas

Jonas Platini Reges et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method for sizing FPV plants in dams of semi-arid regions is proposed, which can be applied in reservoirs. The method uses flood duration curves for sizing and has innovations such as no use of commercial software, the possibility of choosing the reliability level, and the use of graphic analysis of reservoir hydrological behavior.

Spatial and temporal characterization of standard duration-maximum precipitation over Black Sea Region in Turkey

Hakan Aksu et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the spatial and temporal behaviors of maximum precipitation over the Black Sea Region in northern Turkey. The findings reveal that the data set has change points and over half of the meteorological stations show a positive trend in maximum precipitation. The results suggest that maximum precipitation is subject to change in the Black Sea Region of Turkey.

Sensitivity analysis of weather research and forecasting (WRF) model output variables to the thunderstorm lifecycle and its application

Haibo Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated thunderstorms at Urumqi International Airport in 2020 using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model output variables. It was found that different stages of the thunderstorm lifecycle have different sensitivities to WRF output variables. To improve thunderstorm forecasts, a simple and practical objective thunderstorm forecasting method based on the combination of these variables was proposed, which outperformed manual forecasts.

Floating and terrestrial photovoltaic systems comparison under extreme weather conditions

Mustafa Kemal Kaymak et al.

Summary: Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) systems installed on Buyukcekmece Lake in Istanbul help reduce evaporation loss and generate electricity, despite the severe weather conditions. A fully flexible FPV system proved to be more resilient compared to a semi-flexible frame prototype. However, both FPVs and Terrestrial Photovoltaic (TPV) systems showed similar electricity generation capabilities.

Long-term thunderstorm analysis at airports in the Marmara Region: types and favourable atmospheric conditions

Veli Yavuz et al.

Summary: This study conducted long-term analyses of thunderstorm events in Marmara Region airports. The analyses evaluated the events occurring between 2001-2015 in terms of annual, monthly, and intra-day changes. The results showed that more thunderstorms occurred in the summer months after September, with the most events happening in the 2nd time zone (1100-1900 UTC). Rain was also present in 72% of thunderstorm events, while no precipitation occurred in 22% of the events. Additionally, around 50% of thunderstorm events had a convective available potential energy (CAPE) value of zero, and non-zero CAPE values mostly fell within the range of 0 J/kg-1,000 J/kg.

An assessment study of evaporation rate models on a water basin with floating photovoltaic plants

Fausto Bontempo Scavo et al.

Summary: This study aims to model and analyze the impact of floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems on the evaporation rate of water surfaces in basins. The development of numerical models shows that covering only 30% of the surface area of a basin with FPVs can lead to up to a 49% reduction in evaporation.

Evaluating the performance of a WRF initial and physics ensemble over Eastern Black Sea and Mediterranean regions in Turkey

Eren Duzenli et al.

Summary: The study applies a physics- and initial-based ensemble approach to predict extreme precipitation events in the flood-prone regions of Turkey using the WRF model. The choice of microphysics schemes has the most significant impact on precipitation estimates, while planetary boundary layer and cumulus schemes are highly dependent on event timing and location. Selecting appropriate schemes and initial forcing datasets based on season and region can improve forecast accuracy.

Numerical simulation and sensitivity study of a severe hailstorm over Istanbul

Emir Toker et al.

Summary: The study conducted 24 sensitivity simulations with the WRF model and found that only simulations using the Kain Fritsch cumulus scheme were able to generate hail over Istanbul. Among these, the simulation with the YSU PBL, Kain Fritsch cumulus, and Milbrandt microphysics schemes performed the best, producing hail paths that closely matched observations.
