Evidence of rare earth elements origin in acid mine drainage from the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain)

Rafael Leon et al.

Summary: Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a global pollution problem that releases not only toxic metal(oid)s and acidity, but also economically valuable elements, making it a potential secondary source of elements like rare earth elements (REE). The origin of these metals in AMD is still uncertain, but recent hypotheses suggest preferential leaching of REE-enriched minerals as a possible source. Leaching tests with H2SO4 have confirmed the geochemical relationship between AMD and certain country rocks, and a study of minerals with high concentrations of REE has identified REE phosphates and carbonates as the main source of REE in AMD.

Potential Future Alternative Resources for Rare Earth Elements: Opportunities and Challenges

Vysetti Balaram

Summary: Currently, the increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) in various carbon-neutral technologies has led to a need for alternative sources due to depleting ores and rising mining costs. This review focuses on exploring the potential of alternative resources such as marine sediments, coal ash, industrial waste products, and even potential mining on the Moon. It is evident that sustainable REE recovery from these sources is necessary to meet the growing demand and future requirements.

A comprehensive review on recycling of critical raw materials from spent neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnet

Aarti Kumari et al.

Summary: The paper emphasizes on the importance of critical raw materials (CRMs) for green energy technologies, particularly in the windmill and electric vehicle (EVs) sectors. The Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnet is an essential component of these technologies, containing rare earth elements (neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium) that fall under critical category due to their limited availability and high demand. The paper reviews the supply risk associated with these materials and explores the potential of recycling rare earth metals from spent NdFeB magnets. Different recycling methods, including direct recycling and various extraction techniques, are critically examined. Future research is needed to develop an efficient and eco-friendly process for selective extraction and separation of critical rare earths from spent NdFeB magnets in order to avoid the supply risk of these materials.

Effect of Processing Hydrogen Pressure on Magnetic Properties of HDDR Nd-Fe-B Magnet

X. B. Liu et al.

Summary: High coercivity and anisotropic Nd-Fe-B powders for anisotropic bonded magnets were prepared by hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination (HDDR) method. The processing hydrogen pressure is closely related to the formation of c-axis crystal texture of Nd2Fe14B phase, with a critical hydrogen pressure, P-crit, promoting the formation of c-axis texture. The existence of P-crit is attributed to the thermodynamics and kinetics during HDDR process.

Rare earth metals from secondary sources: Review of potential supply from waste and byproducts

Gabrielle Gaustad et al.

Summary: This study explores the resource and economic potential for extracting rare earth elements (REEs) from waste and byproduct streams, finding that some secondary sources are richer in high value REEs. By combining materials flow analysis and characterization data, the study provides high-level guidance on the potential contribution of secondary sources.

Sustainable Strategies for the Exploitation of End-of-Life Permanent Magnets

Alessandro Becci et al.

Summary: The growing production of green technologies is increasing the demand for rare earth elements, with end-of-life permanent magnets considered as a potential secondary resource. A life cycle assessment was used to identify the most sustainable choice and suggest improvements to reduce environmental impact. The study aims to promote sustainable processes for end-of-life permanent magnet exploitation at an industrial scale.
