Superior intrinsic flame-retardant phosphorylated chitosan aerogel as fully sustainable thermal insulation bio-based material

Summary: Due to environmental pollution and energy-related challenges, there is a growing interest in using renewable polysaccharides like chitosan in the preparation of biodegradable aerogel heat-insulation materials. In this study, a phosphorylated chitosan (PCS) with a high substitution degree of phosphate groups was synthesized using a simple and low-cost method. The PCS aerogel exhibited outstanding flame retardancy, with a limited oxygen index above 80% and a UL-94 rating of V-0. It also showed significantly reduced heat release rates compared to chitosan aerogel, making it a promising sustainable flame-retardant heat-insulation material with low thermal conductivity and excellent hydrophobicity.

Highly Efficient Flame-Retardant and Enhanced PVA-Based Composite Aerogels through Interpenetrating Cross-Linking Networks

Summary: Poly(vinyl alcohol) (P)/alginate (A)/MMT (M) (PAM) composite aerogels were modified through interpenetrating cross-linking of methyltriethoxysilane (Ms) or gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (K) and calcium ion (Ca2+) as a cross-linking agent, respectively. The compressive moduli of the cross-linked PAM/MsCa and PAM/KCa aerogels greatly increased, reaching approximately 10.5- and 8.2-fold of that of PAM aerogel, respectively. The highly efficient flame-retardant PAM-based composite aerogels with excellent mechanical properties are promising as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based foams.

Silane modified MXene/polybenzazole nanocomposite aerogels with exceptional surface hydrophobicity, flame retardance and thermal insulation

The optimized FMP aerogel exhibited low density, good surface hydrophobicity, and mechanical robustness. Additionally, it displayed reliable flame resistance and structural stability, and superior thermal insulation compared to traditional polymer foam materials. This work presents an innovative strategy for developing hydrophobic, flame retardant, and thermal insulating aerogel materials with promising applications.

Sustainable cellulose-based multifunctional material for electromagnetic shielding, flame retardancy and antibacterial

Summary: The paper presents a study on the synthesis of flame-retardant compound aerogels by cross-linking cellulose nanofibrils with melamine formaldehyde and surface decorating with methyltrimethoxysilane. The compound aerogels showed improved mechanical performance and excellent hydrophobicity and flame retardant properties. The analysis results revealed the occurrence of condensed phase and gas phase flame retardant mechanisms during combustion, and the synergistic effect between melamine formaldehyde and methyltrimethoxysilane. Moreover, the compound aerogels had very low thermal conductivity, making them suitable for heat preservation materials.

Multifunctional cellulose-based aerogel for intelligent fire fighting

The use of cellulose fiber from office waste paper to improve the thermal insulation-related property of konjac glucomannan/starch aerogel

Improvement of Flame Retardancy of Polyurethane Foam Using DOPO-Immobilized Silica Aerogel
