A critical review of the life cycle assessment studies on road pavements and road infrastructures

Yash Aryan et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies related to road pavements and infrastructures. This study critically analyzes these studies, examining their goals, scopes, impact categories, life cycle phases, methods and limitations. The analysis of 67 LCA studies shows that the majority focused on material and construction phase, only assessed a few impact categories, and were conducted in developed countries. There is a need to include all supporting infrastructures, pay attention to sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, and evaluate negative consequences during the construction phase to make LCA a robust decision-making tool for sustainability.
