Groundwater hydrogeochemical characterization and quality assessment based on integrated weight matter-element extension analysis in Ningxia, upper Yellow River, northwest China

Xiaodong Wang et al.

Summary: Assessing groundwater quality and identifying pollutant risks are essential for managing groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions. This study analyzed the hydrochemical characteristics, pollutant characteristics, and health risks of groundwater in the upper Yellow River region. The study used traditional analysis methods as well as integrated weight matter-element extension analysis and health risk models. The results showed that the groundwater in the study area had weak alkalinity and the predominant hydrochemical types were SO4 center dot Cl-Ca center dot Mg, SO4 center dot Cl-Na, and HCO3-Ca center dot Mg. Nitrogen pollution was caused by industrial activities and fertilizers, while fluorine pollution was caused by fluorite dissolution. The overall groundwater quality was good, but there were health risks present in some samples. Real-time monitoring and continuous assessment of pollutants are important for groundwater management and protection.

Haiping Luo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that heavy metals in dust storms are mainly contaminated by human activities, with sources from industrial, transportation, natural, and agricultural sectors. The comprehensive ecological risk of heavy metals is low, but moderate and above risks exist at individual sites. Both adults and children face higher carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks from the ingestion route, with children having higher risks than adults.

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accumulation status, temporal change, and sources of soil heavy metals in a rapidly urbanizing and industrializing area along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China. The results showed that agricultural soil around industrial areas had the highest concentrations of heavy metals, with cadmium and mercury being priority pollutants. Industrial activities, parent materials, and agricultural and traffic activities were identified as the major sources of soil heavy metals.

Summary: This study used statistical models to determine the sources of heavy metals in urban wetland sediments in southwest China. The results showed that anthropogenic activities were the major contributors to the pollution. The positive matrix factorization model was found to be more accurate in predicting the concentrations of heavy metals. The risk assessment model revealed that the levels of heavy metals did not pose significant ecological or human health risks.

Summary: The quality of agricultural soils is crucial for agricultural production and food safety. This study assessed the health risks of farmland soils in Huairou District, Beijing, and found that mercury posed greater ecological risks compared to other heavy metals. The integration of the PMF model and Pearson's correlation analysis identified five pollution sources, with agricultural activities contributing the most to the health risks of all populations.

Evolution patterns and spatial sources of water and sediment discharge over the last 70 years in the Yellow River, China: A case study in the Ningxia Reach

Jindian Miao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the evolution patterns and spatial sources of water and sediment discharge in the Yellow River from 1951 to 2020. It found that both water and sediment discharge significantly decreased over the past 70 years, with a significant change occurring in 1986. The dominant factor affecting water discharge variations was water diversion, while sediment aggradation and tributary inflow sediment were the dominant factors affecting sediment discharge variations. Anthropogenic activities, such as water and sediment diversions, dams and reservoirs, and water and soil conservation measures, also had an impact on water and sediment discharge changes.
