S. M. Talha Qadri et al.

Summary: Within the last three decades, Pakistan has experienced twelve major earthquakes, resulting in significant loss of life and billions of dollars in economic damage. Despite the general understanding of seismic hazards in various parts of the country, densely populated cities like Attock still require a detailed vulnerability analysis to mitigate the impact of a major earthquake. This study integrates seismic hazard assessment schemes to evaluate the vulnerability of Attock city and highlights the inconsistency between current building designs and the expected seismic response and soil amplification, emphasizing the need for pre-disaster mitigation strategies.

Impact of COVID lockdowns on spatio-temporal variability in land surface temperature and vegetation index

Apurba Tewari et al.

Summary: In urban areas, the heating effects known as urban heat island (UHI) effect are mainly caused by industrial and human activities. The study investigated the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on these effects in three cities in India's coal mining belt. The results showed a significant decrease in land surface temperature (LST) values and an increase in vegetation indices (NDVI and P-v) during the lockdown period. Statistical tests confirmed the significance of these changes, suggesting the positive impact of lockdown on reducing heating/UHI effects.

Global Urban Land Expansion Tends To Be Slope Climbing: A Remotely Sensed Nighttime Light Approach

Kaifang Shi et al.

Summary: The slope climbing of urban land expansion (SE) has become prevalent and unique characteristics in urban form, landscape, and governance pose challenges for sustainable development worldwide. However, there has been limited attention given to the SE over a long time series. This study quantifies and evaluates global SE using slope spectrum analysis on urban entities from 2000 to 2020. Findings show an increase in global urban entities and an upward trend in average slope. Notably, China has experienced rapid SE due to unprecedented urbanization. The study emphasizes the importance of considering SE in sustainable urban development and formulating effective governance policies and strategies.

Impact of COVID-19-Related Traffic Slowdown on Urban Heat Characteristics

Bernardo Teufel et al.

Summary: This study assesses the direct impact of the decrease in traffic-related heat emissions due to COVID-19 on urban temperature characteristics, finding that an 80% reduction in traffic can lead to a decrease of up to 1 degrees C in near-surface temperature in regions with heavy traffic. The results also show a reduction of up to 20% in hot hours during the warm season, indicating a decrease in heat stress for vulnerable populations. It highlights the need for additional measures to reduce urban temperatures and associated heat stress, especially in a warming climate, even with potential reductions in traffic.
