Health Risk Assessment, Composition, and Distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Drinking Water of Southern Jharkhand, East India

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: Research on the occurrence, distribution, health risks, and composition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in drinking water is limited in India and globally. This study in Southern Jharkhand found that groundwater samples in certain districts were more contaminated by PAHs, likely due to industrial activities and high vehicular density. The dominant sources of PAHs were identified as fuel combustion and coal, grass, and wood burning, with concentrations exceeding permissible limits in some areas, posing potential health risks from chronic exposure.

Health Risk Assessment and Characterization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon from the Hydrosphere

Summary: This study aimed to determine the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water bodies in India, finding that the Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers were more contaminated with PAHs. The dominant PAHs in the samples were low molecular weight Naphthalene and high molecular weight Pyrene. The study suggests that combustion and petrogenic sources within the city may be the main origins of PAHs in the area.
