Potential and future prospects of biochar-based materials and their applications in removal of organic contaminants from industrial wastewater

Summary: Paper, oil, leather, and textile industries generate a large amount of harmful organic pollutants, such as residual dyes, which are released into the environment and pose severe health hazards. These pollutants can accumulate in aquatic organisms and plants, leading to imbalances in the ecosystem and even death. Synthetic dyes, commonly used in the textile industries, can cause cancer and genetic mutations when humans come into contact with them through the food chain or physical contact. Various physicochemical and biological methods, including the use of biochar, can be employed to manage the harmful effluents from textile industries before releasing them into nature. This review focuses on the potential of biochar in pollutant removal, climate mitigation, soil and water enhancement, as well as bioethanol production improvement. Additionally, different types of dyes and their toxicity are discussed, along with the management of industrial waste effluents using biochar derived from agroindustrial waste and recent advancements in the adsorption of dyes using biochar.
