What does network analysis teach us about international environmental cooperation?

Summary: This paper applies network analysis to examine the structural properties of international environmental cooperation and presents four related hypotheses. It finds that the increasing popularity of environmental treaties has led to the emergence of a collaboration network, which is continuously growing. The study also reveals that the network has become denser and more cohesive over time, facilitating more effective policy coordination and knowledge diffusion. Furthermore, it identifies the noticeable influence of European countries, particularly the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, in brokering environmental cooperation. It also highlights the shift in environmental coordination focus from fisheries and the sea to waste and hazardous substances.

Participation in protected area governance: A systematic case survey of the evidence on ecological and social outcomes

To improve environmental equality and outcomes, involving local stakeholders in decision-making processes is important. A systematic literature review of 52 empirical case studies shows that genuine devolution of power, diverse actor involvement, long-term external support, and devolution of rights are linked to the success of protected areas. These findings provide evidence for designing more effective participatory conservation interventions that benefit both biodiversity and human well-being.

A Scenario Simulation of Material Substitution in the Cement Industry under the Carbon Neutral Strategy: A Case Study of Guangdong

Summary: The Chinese government aims to reach peak carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. This study employs a three-scenario analysis approach to forecast the potential for emission reduction in the cement industry through material substitution. By developing new cement additives and improving the use of low-carbon raw materials, the clinker-to-cement ratio and the percentage of clinker produced from low-carbon materials can be significantly reduced, leading to a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions.

Construction and optimization strategy of ecological security pattern based on ecosystem services and landscape connectivity: a case study of Guizhou Province, China

Summary: Rapid urbanization and irrational human activities have led to numerous environmental problems, posing a serious threat to regional ecological security. This study used the Guizhou Province, a representative karst mountainous region in China, to establish and optimize ecological security patterns (ESPs) by integrating ecosystem services and landscape connectivity. The results showed significant spatial heterogeneity in the three ecosystem services and that the optimized ecological network structure greatly enhanced ecological connectivity. The findings provide meaningful insights for ecological protection and restoration.

Exploring ecosystem services trade-offs using the Bayesian belief network model for ecological restoration decision-making: A case study in Guizhou Province, China

Coupling analysis on ecological environment fragility and poverty in South China Karst

Summary: The study reveals that the multi-dimensional poverty index is higher in the south, north, and northwest of Guizhou, while the overall ecological environment quality is higher in the west and lower in the east. There is a high coupling degree between the ecological vulnerability index of poor villages and the multi-dimensional poverty index, mainly showing moderate coordination and basic coordination. The results indicate that economic development in the east and ecological restoration in the west should be given more attention in the process of poverty reduction in Guizhou Province.
