An examination of critical determinants of carbon offsetting attitudes: the role of gender

Gregory Denton et al.

Summary: The study examines the determinants of travelers' carbon offsetting attitudes and the role of gender in cognitive appraisal and attitude formation. It finds that females have higher objective knowledge, credibility in climate science, and carbon offsetting attitudes, while males have higher subjective knowledge. Knowledge is not a perfect predictor of carbon offsetting attitudes and can negatively impact attitudes through indirect effects on trust and perceived credibility. Additionally, travelers who process information heuristically (primarily males) will respond differently to stimuli than travelers who process information systematically (primarily females).
