Colorimetric and fluorescent probe based on coumarin for sequential sensing of mercury (II) and cyanide ions in aqueous solutions

Jalal Isaad et al.

Summary: A novel coumarin-thiol chemosensor L has been designed and prepared for sequential colorimetric and fluorescent detection of mercury (II) and cyanide ions in aqueous solution. The probe L shows high selectivity and sensitivity towards mercury (II) cations, and forms a complex L/Hg2+ which exhibits red-shift and fluorescence quenching. In turn, the complex L/Hg2+ shows high selectivity for cyanide anions. A test paper was also developed for simultaneous detection of mercury (II) and cyanide ions in pure water without the need for additional equipment.

Modified Hazelnut Shells as a Novel Adsorbent for the Removal of Nitrate from Wastewater

Marija Stjepanovic et al.

Summary: This study aims to prepare a novel adsorbent by modifying hazelnut shells and evaluate its effectiveness in removing nitrates from model solutions and real wastewater. The results show that the modified hazelnut shell (MHS) has a high nitrate removal efficiency, and it can be used over a wide range of pH values. The adsorption process can be explained by both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models, and the kinetics can be described by a pseudo-second order model. The nitrate adsorption process is mainly controlled by chemisorption.

Nitrogen Removal From Nitrate-Containing Wastewaters in Hydrogen-Based Membrane Biofilm Reactors via Hydrogen Autotrophic Denitrification: Biofilm Structure, Microbial Community and Optimization Strategies

Kun Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, the key controlling parameters of the hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR), including hydrogen pressure, pH, and biofilm thickness, were optimized to achieve high-efficiency nitrate removal. The results showed that the optimized parameters led to a biofilm thickness of 653.31 mu m, hydrogen pressure of 0.05 MPa, and pH of 7.78, resulting in a NO3--N removal flux of 1.15 g·m(-2)·d(-1). The analysis of 16S rRNA genes revealed the presence of five abundant bacterial genera in the MBfR after optimization, with Pseudomonas showing a significant increase in relative abundance from 0.36% to 9.77%, indicating effective nitrogen removal. Furthermore, the membrane surfaces exhibited calcification during stable operation, as observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses, and the elemental composition analysis confirmed the presence of calcium, oxygen, carbon, phosphorus, and iron on the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane surfaces. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the formation of a Ca5F(PO4)3 geometry during the stable operation phase.

Effectiveness of phosphorus control under extreme heatwaves: implications for sediment nutrient releases and greenhouse gas emissions

Qing Zhan et al.

Summary: Eutrophication is a key factor leading to water quality deterioration in inland waters globally, and extreme heatwave events can potentially hinder efforts to control it by affecting nutrient abatement techniques and biogeochemical processes. The study found that exposure to extreme heatwaves compromised the effectiveness of lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) in reducing nutrients, leading to increased phosphorus concentration and altered nitrogen cycling, as well as elevated greenhouse gas emissions. The findings suggest that under future climate scenarios with more frequent and intense extreme events, current eutrophication control efforts will face greater challenges.

Insights into kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics of phosphorus sorption onto nanoscale zero-valent iron

Ibrahim Maamoun et al.

Summary: The study found that Langmuir isotherm and pseudo 2nd order kinetic model were the best models to describe the removal of phosphorus by nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI). The research also confirmed the applicability of the proposed models in interpreting the experimental data and revealed the involvement of chemisorption mechanism in the removal process. Additionally, thermodynamic analysis showed the endothermic nature in the NZVI/P system and the occurrence of sorption and reaction rate analysis on two main diffusion steps.

Summary: A novel photochemical denitrification process was proposed to effectively reduce nitrate to N-2 with nearly 100% denitrification efficiency. Experimental and theoretical calculations confirmed hydrated electron (e(aq)(-)) as the main reactive species for rapid removal of nitrate and nitrite. The high dispersion of e(aq)(-) in water and the rapid reaction rate contributed to the high selectivity of N-2, making the process promising for practical wastewater treatment.
