Nanomaterials and Their Impact on the Immune System

Alaa A. Aljabali et al.

Summary: Nanomaterials have been extensively studied in the medical and industrial sectors, but their potential toxicities have raised concerns. Researchers are interested in how nanoparticles interact with the immune system and their biomolecules. This review examines literature on the immunostimulatory and immunosuppressive effects of nanomaterials and their interactions with immune cells, as well as the possibility of creating stealth nanomaterials that evade the immune system.

Comparative Toxicity Analyses from Different Endpoints: Are New Cyclic Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs) More Toxic than Common Aliphatic DBPs?

Yun Wu et al.

Summary: The study compared the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of cyclic DBPs and aliphatic DBPs, revealing different toxicity rank orders with application of different endpoints. A Pearson correlation analysis of DBP toxicity data showed high correlation between observed cytotoxicity in Hep G2 cells and zebrafish embryo toxicity with previously reported in vitro and in vivo toxicity. The study also established two QSAR models to interpret the toxicity mechanisms of DBPs from different endpoints.

The Influence of Silver Nanoparticle Form on the Toxicity in Freshwater Mussels

Joelle Auclair et al.

Summary: This study examined the toxicity of different structures (sphere, cube, and prism) of silver nanomaterials (nAg) in Dreissena bugensis mussels. The results showed that spheric and prismatic nAg significantly decreased viscosity in the mussels, while cubic nAg reduced protein aggregation in the cytoplasm. Additionally, the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was more strongly decreased by prismatic nAg compared to cubic and spheric nAg. It was concluded that the geometries of nanoparticles could influence their toxicity in aquatic organisms.

Toxic Effects of Copper Nanoparticles on Paramecium bursaria-Chlorella Symbiotic System

Bingyu Tan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the toxic effects of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) on the Paramecium bursaria-Chlorella symbiotic system. The results showed that CuNP exposure led to high levels of reactive oxygen species, oxidative damage, and energy metabolism disorder in both the host and symbiotic algae. Transmission electron micrographs revealed that the symbiotic algae were digested in the cytoplasm of P. bursaria, indicating a disruption in the stability of the symbiotic system. The increased energy demand and oxidative stress resulted in decreased photosynthetic products provided to the host, digestion of the symbiont, and destruction of the stable symbiotic relationship.

Toxicology assessment of manganese oxide nanomaterials with enhanced electrochemical properties using human in vitro models representing different exposure routes

Natalia Fernandez-Pampin et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comparative human toxicity assessment between newly developed Mn3O4 nanoparticles with enhanced electrochemical properties and their precursor material. The results showed that both nanomaterials induced ROS in cells and had differences in terms of surface area and electrochemical properties. Skin irritation potential was not observed for the studied nanomaterials. The findings highlight the importance of using different human in vitro models to understand the potential impact of nanomaterials on different exposure routes.

Summary: The study evaluated the validity of traditional mixture risk assessment paradigms IA and CA with NAMs data. Results showed that CA is more accurate in predicting mixture effects compared to IA, but in some cases, mixture bioactivity appeared to be greater than that of individual components.

Behavioural alterations induced by chronic exposure to 10 nm silicon dioxide nanoparticles

Bashir Jarrar et al.

Summary: The study found that chronic exposure to SiO2 NPs may lead to anxiety, depression, behavioral despair, reduced exploratory and locomotor activity, with induced errors in memory. This suggests that these nanoparticles could potentially induce oxidative stress in the body, causing neurobehavioral alterations and changes in vital organs such as the central nervous system.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment of contaminants of emerging concern identified by suspect screening from urban wastewater treatment plant effluents at a territorial scale

Antoine Gosset et al.

Summary: This study conducted a territorial-scale ERA on CECs detected in the effluents of 10 WWTPs in a highly urbanized territory using LC-QToF-MS, focusing on pharmaceutical residue and pesticides. The results identified high risks for several CECs individually, with additional significant risks found in mixtures of CECs. The study highlighted the importance of assessing not only individual CECs but also their combined effects on ecotoxicological risks in urban streams.
