Evaluation of the water quality of a highly polluted stream with water quality indices and health risk assessment methods

Memet Varol et al.

Summary: The water quality of corlu Stream in the Thrace region of Turkiye, under intense industrial pressure, was evaluated. The results showed that stations S2 and S3 receiving domestic and industrial discharges were seriously polluted and had poor water quality. In addition, health risks from ingestion of combined metals were identified at station S3 for both children and adults, and at station S2 for children. The presence of Cr and As at station S3 may also pose carcinogenic health risks for residents.

Brief status of contamination in surface water of rivers of India by heavy metals: a review with pollution indices and health risk assessment

Akshay Botle et al.

Summary: Water pollution is a major concern, especially heavy metal (HM) contamination, due to its toxicity and impact on the aquatic environment. This study focuses on assessing HMs in Indian river surface water from 1991 to 2021, using multivariate analysis to identify multiple sources of HMs. The results show that the concentrations of Fe, Cr, Pb, Ni, Cd, Mn, Hg, Co, and As in the rivers far exceed the permitted limits set by international and national standards. The rivers under investigation are heavily polluted by HMs, posing non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to both children and adults, with children being more vulnerable. Remediation approaches such as eco-friendly adsorbents, phytoremediation, and bio-remediation should be included in river management plans to reduce human risks.

Automatization and evaluation of a remote sensing-based indicator for wetland health assessment in East Africa on national and local scales

Stefanie Steinbach et al.

Summary: To ensure sustainable wetlands use and prevent wetland degradation, decision-makers and managing institutions require quantitative and spatially explicit information on the condition of wetland ecosystems. Remote sensing, particularly the Wetland Use Intensity (WUI) indicator based on Mean Absolute Spectral Dynamics (MASD), has the potential to assist in wetland mapping, inventorying, and monitoring. Using the Google Earth Engine (GEE), an automated approach for calculating WUI was developed, providing high quality results and requiring minimal user input. The application of WUI in Rwanda demonstrated its potential to assess wetland health and contribute to wetland management efforts, as it is informative, distinct from existing indicators, and applicable even under cloudy conditions.

Exploring spatial correlations between ecosystem services and sustainable development goals: a regional-scale study from China

Zihan Xu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the spatial correlations between ecosystem services (ESs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to support sustainable landscape planning in Guangdong Province. The results showed significant differences in the correlations between ESs and SDGs among regions with different social-ecological backgrounds, suggesting the need for targeted strategies in SDG-oriented sustainable landscape planning.

Development of a Novel Fuzzy Logic-Based Wetland Health Assessment Approach for the Management of Freshwater Wetland Ecosystems

Sajad Soleymani Hasani et al.

Summary: A new wetland health assessment approach based on the fuzzy inference system (FIS) was proposed in this study to improve traditional wetland classification and assessment. Two Iranian wetlands, Kanibarazan and Choghakhor, were selected as study areas due to their significant roles in protecting biodiversity. The study modified indicators of the traditional assessment approach to suit regional environmental conditions and evaluated the efficiency of the proposed method with selected case studies.
