What makes cities livable? Determinants of neighborhood satisfaction and neighborhood happiness in different contexts

Kostas Mouratidis et al.

Summary: This study examines and compares the determinants of neighborhood satisfaction and happiness in Thessaloniki, Greece and Oslo, Norway, using geospatial and survey data. The results show that common determinants of satisfaction are proximity to city center, perceived safety, and place attachment, while common determinants of happiness are perceived safety, perceived quietness, social cohesion, place attachment, and lower density. The study also reveals important differences between the two cities, suggesting that the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and livability depends on the local context.

Urban vertical profiles of three most urbanized Chinese cities and the spatial coupling with horizontal urban expansion

Chen Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a spatially explicit ensemble model to map the wall-to-wall building height of the three most urbanized Chinese cities in 2017. The model utilizes open-access satellite data and nighttime light intensity to generate building height maps. The results show that the vertical urban profiles are coupled with horizontal urban expansion and differ among cities due to local urbanization strategies. The knowledge of the vertical profiles can assist sustainable land use and urban planning.

Comparing eco-civilization theory and practice: Big-data evidence from China

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: Constructing an eco-civilization is crucial for green, low-carbon development. However, there are inconsistencies and imbalances between theoretical research and practical efforts. This paper analyzes China's progress towards eco-civilization at theoretical and practical levels. The results show that theory is moving towards interdisciplinary directions, while eco-civilization projects need to focus more on low-carbon research.

Assessing spatial-temporal evolution and key factors of urban livability in arid zone: The case study of the Loess Plateau, China

Yi Xiao et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between urban livability (UL) and sustainable development goals (SDGs), and constructs a comprehensive evaluation index system for assessing urban livability in arid areas. The evaluation results show that the overall livable level of the studied cities is not ideal, with a fluctuating upward trend over time and a central depression in spatial distribution. Additionally, the study identifies six key factors that impact urban livability in the Loess Plateau. This research is important for studying and constructing ecologically livable cities and achieving sustainable development goals.
