What makes cities livable? Determinants of neighborhood satisfaction and neighborhood happiness in different contexts

Summary: This study examines and compares the determinants of neighborhood satisfaction and happiness in Thessaloniki, Greece and Oslo, Norway, using geospatial and survey data. The results show that common determinants of satisfaction are proximity to city center, perceived safety, and place attachment, while common determinants of happiness are perceived safety, perceived quietness, social cohesion, place attachment, and lower density. The study also reveals important differences between the two cities, suggesting that the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and livability depends on the local context.

Urban vertical profiles of three most urbanized Chinese cities and the spatial coupling with horizontal urban expansion

Summary: This study proposes a spatially explicit ensemble model to map the wall-to-wall building height of the three most urbanized Chinese cities in 2017. The model utilizes open-access satellite data and nighttime light intensity to generate building height maps. The results show that the vertical urban profiles are coupled with horizontal urban expansion and differ among cities due to local urbanization strategies. The knowledge of the vertical profiles can assist sustainable land use and urban planning.

Assessing spatial-temporal evolution and key factors of urban livability in arid zone: The case study of the Loess Plateau, China

Additionally, the study identifies six key factors that impact urban livability in the Loess Plateau.
