Mechano-chemical rubber reclamation using aminolysis products of waste flexible polyurethane foams as the devulcanizing agent

Wenchao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, polyurethane aminolysis products (PAPs) were used for the first time to assist in the devulcanization of waste rubbers, improving the mechanical properties of the reclaimed rubbers. The amine groups in PAPs enhanced the devulcanization process by coupling with radicals generated during the scissions of crosslink bonds. The addition of PAPs also improved the cure time, crosslink density, and hardness of the reclaimed rubbers. The method demonstrated a promising dual high-value recycling of waste polyurethanes and rubbers.

High-quality ground tire rubber production from scrap tires by using supercritical carbon dioxide jet pulverization assisted with diphenyl disulfide

Zefeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a promising recycling technology for scrap tires by using supercritical carbon dioxide jet pulverization incorporated with diphenyl disulfide as a devulcanization reagent. The research investigated the effects of rubber swelling on particle size distributions, thermal degradation behaviors, and devulcanization behaviors of the acquired high-quality ground tire rubber (GTR). The results showed that fine pulverization and desired rubber devulcanization can be achieved, leading to excellent properties of the GTR.

Organic chemical devulcanization of rubber vulcanizates in supercritical carbon dioxide and associated less eco-unfriendly approaches: A review

Jabulani Gumede et al.

Summary: There is a growing need to recover raw materials from waste due to increasing environmental concerns and the widely adopted transition to circular economy. For waste tyres, it is necessary to continuously develop methods and processes that can devulcanize rubber vulcanizates into rubber products with qualities and properties that can closely match those of the virgin rubber.

Using chemical agent in microwave assisted devulcanization of NR/SBR blends: An effective recycling method

M. Vahdatbin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the devulcanization of NR/SBR blend using a new chemical devulcanizing agent (VitaX) and microwave irradiation. The effects of irradiation time, stirring speed, particle size, and VitaX content on the devulcanization process were evaluated. The results showed that the chemical-microwave assisted devulcanization method is a promising approach for recycling rubber.

Waste tire rubber devulcanization technologies: State-of-the-art, limitations and future perspectives

Paulina Wisniewska et al.

Summary: Waste tire management is a major global environmental issue, and finding low-cost and industrial-scale tire recycling methods is gaining more attention. The sustainable development of rubber devulcanization technologies and the appropriate design of cradle-to-cradle loops for rubber goods are considered promising strategies for achieving a higher level of rubber recycling. This work presents an overview of patented waste tire rubber devulcanization technologies and discusses their performance characteristics, environmental aspects, and limitations. The findings show that the reclaimed rubbers described in patents have higher tensile strength and elongation break compared to literature data or commercial products, with significant differences attributed to devulcanization efficiency and rubber treatment conditions. Considering environmental and economic aspects, reactive extrusion is identified as the most promising method for further developing rubber devulcanization technologies.

Recycling of waste tire rubber as aggregate in impact-resistant engineered cementitious composites

Zongping Chen et al.

Summary: With the development of modern transportation, the recycling and reusing of waste tires have become a global concern. This study aimed to develop impact-resistant engineered cementitious composites (ECC) using waste tire rubber as aggregate. The mechanical behaviors of rubber-modified ECC were investigated, and the impact tests were conducted under different environmental temperatures and impact heights. The results showed that rubber-modified ECC is more suitable as impact-resistant material in cold regions.
