Dual-mode antibacterial core-shell gold nanorod@mesoporous-silica/curcumin nanocomplexes for efficient photothermal and photodynamic therapy

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, necessitating the need for new therapies. Photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy are effective sterilization methods. In this study, silica-coated gold nanorods and curcumin were used to form PTT/PDT dual-mode antibacterial nanocomposites (AuNRs@Cur). AuNRs@Cur exhibited higher singlet oxygen yield and photothermal conversion efficiency, improving the utilization rate of photosensitizer and enhancing the photoinactivation effect of bacteria.

The Current Knowledge on the Pathogenesis of Tissue and Medical Device-Related Biofilm Infections

Enea Gino Di Domenico et al.

Summary: Biofilm-related infections pose a significant challenge to healthcare professionals due to the ability of microorganisms to form biofilm, which leads to treatment resistance and reduced susceptibility to antibiotics. Current microbiological diagnosis and antibiotic susceptibility testing methods are often inadequate for accurately assessing biofilm-related infections. Timely identification of these infections is crucial for guiding appropriate treatment strategies.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Materials for Antimicrobial Applications

Rui Li et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising materials for a variety of antimicrobial applications, due to their different functions including controlled decomposition of components with bactericidal activity, strong interactions with bacterial membranes, and formation of photogenerated reactive oxygen species (ROS). These materials are classified as component-releasing, photocatalytic, chelation antimicrobial agents, and carriers or synergistic antimicrobial agents of other functional materials.

Using essential oils to overcome bacterial biofilm formation and their antimicrobial resistance

Khaled A. El-Tarabily et al.

Summary: The increase of resistant bacteria poses a significant financial burden worldwide, requiring the development of new policies to address the issue. Essential oils have shown potential as alternative antimicrobials, with the ability to inhibit both biofilm formation and pathogenic bacteria, suggesting they could be integrated into new antimicrobial strategies for AMR control.
