Expected radiation environment and damage for YBCO tapes in compact fusion reactors

D. Torsello et al.

Summary: We investigated the expected neutron damage in high-temperature superconducting tapes used in compact fusion reactors. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to obtain the neutron spectrum and fluence at the magnet position, which were then used to calculate the energy distributions of primary knock-on atoms for each atomic species in the superconductor. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to characterize the displacement cascades in terms of size and morphology. The expected radiation environment was compared with the neutron spectrum and fluences achievable in current experimental facilities to identify similarities and differences that are relevant to the understanding of radiation hardness of these materials in real fusion conditions. Our findings show that different neutron spectra result in different damage regimes, irradiation temperature influences the number of defects generated, and neutron-superconductor interaction leads to local temperature increase. These observations suggest the need for further experimental investigations in different conditions and the necessity of neutron shielding in compact fusion reactors.

Nanodiamond Influence on the Nucleation and Growth of YBCO Superconducting Film Deposited by Metal-Organic Decomposition

Valentina Pinto et al.

Summary: It has been shown that incorporating nanodiamond (ND) into a YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) film can enhance the critical current density under self-field conditions. This enhancement is attributed to the denser and smoother film structure facilitated by ND. The presence of ND affects the reaction responsible for YBCO production, slowing down the nucleation process and promoting c-axis growth, which improves the superconducting properties of the YBCO+ND film.

The variation of pinning efficiency in YBCO films containing columnar defects

Li Liu et al.

Summary: YBCO films irradiated with different ions showed the existence of columnar defects, confirmed by TEM analysis. The study found that pinning efficiency η increased monotonically with temperature in all irradiated samples, but in films with latent tracks, η reached its maximum at low magnetic field and then decreased slowly as the magnetic field increased. This phenomenon, along with the peak position Bp below the matching field and the characteristics of samples with larger columnar defects, provide important insights for future applications.

Comparative study of dimensionality and superconducting parameters in YBCO-NaNbO3 nanoparticles- and nanorods-added composite sample from excess conductivity analysis

Mamta Dahiya et al.

Summary: The effects of adding NaNbO3 nanoparticles or nanorods to YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) on superconducting parameters were studied. The addition of NaNbO3 at a concentration of 0.5 wt% to 2.0 wt% in YBCO showed enhanced critical magnetic fields (B-C1(0) and B-C2(0)) and critical current densities (J(C)(0)), but further increase in additive material led to a decrease in superconducting parameters. The addition of NaNbO3 nanorods was found to be more effective compared to nanoparticles at the same wt% of additive material.

Daxing Huang et al.

Summary: This research reports an efficient method for superconducting joints of YBCO coated conductors. By etching microchannels in the YBCO layer, the recovery of critical current in the superconducting joint is accelerated, and a dense joining is formed to enable superconducting current path. This technique can promote the persistent current mode operation of 2G HTS magnets in applications such as magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear magnetic resonance.

A broadband detector based on series YBCO grain boundary Josephson junctions

Egor Glushkov et al.

Summary: In this study, a model of a broadband receiving system based on a meander series of Josephson YBaCuO grain boundary junctions integrated into a log-periodic antenna was developed. The electromagnetic properties of the system were investigated, and a numerical simulation of one-dimensional arrays was carried out. The performance of the detector, including current-voltage characteristic, responsivity, noise, and NEP, was calculated. The results showed that using a series of junctions can significantly improve the responsivity, NEP value, and power dynamic range.

Biaxially textured MgO buffer layer on flexible metal template for coated conductor

Qiong Nie et al.

Summary: A low-cost chemical solution deposition planarization system was designed for Y2O3 seed layers in YBCO coated conductors. The system produced amorphous Y2O3 films on the surface of bare Hastelloy alloys with a surface roughness of 1.5 nm, which served as the seed layer for the subsequent deposition of MgO layers. The optimized thickness of the MgO layers resulted in the development of a biaxial texture. The YBCO functional layer deposited on the LMO layer exhibited a high self-field critical current density of 2.5MA/cm(2).

Employment of NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film seed in the infiltration growth technique for fabricating single-grain YBCO bulk superconductors

Guo-Zheng Li et al.

Summary: By using commercial NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film as seed, YBCO single grains were successfully grown in two infiltration growth (IG) processes, proving the feasibility of film seed in the IG method. The presence of four strictly perpendicular growth sector boundaries on the top surface and clear (0 0 l) diffraction peaks in X-ray diffraction (XRD) results demonstrate the high c-axis orientation and good growth quality of the samples, showcasing the excellent performance of the NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film seed in the IG method. Superconducting property measurements show that the 011-IG YBCO sample exhibited higher levitation force and Jc properties compared to the 211-IG sample.
