Use of micro, capillary, and nano liquid chromatography for forensic analysis

Joel B. Langford et al.

Summary: The use of micro, capillary, and nano liquid chromatography systems in forensic analysis shows great potential, especially in cases where sample size is limited. Reduction in flow rates can significantly lower operating costs and improve detection limits when using mass spectrometric analysis. Recent advances in miniaturized liquid chromatography systems also aim at in-laboratory and on-site detection, with promising areas not yet applied to forensic research being discussed.

Serpentine Micromixers Using Extensional Mixing Elements

George Tomaras et al.

Summary: Computational fluid dynamics modeling was used to study the effect of integrating constrictions defined by hyperbolic vertices on the flow structure in microfluidic serpentine channels. The new topology combines Dean flows, elongational flows, and asymmetric longitudinal eddies, resulting in a complex flow structure that promotes enhanced mixing. Optimization of the geometrical parameters of the constrictions allows for the development of an efficient micromixer topology with robust performance across a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

Effect of Aspect Ratio on the Mixing Performance in the Kenics Static Mixer

Xingren Jiang et al.

Summary: Continuous manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry has gained more attention due to its safety features and improved mass transfer, but scalability has been a challenge. The Kenics static mixer in a tubular flow reactor has emerged as a solution for this issue, with research indicating that a lower aspect ratio can lead to better mixing performance. Adjusting the aspect ratio of the Kenics static mixer could be a new strategy for scaling up continuous processes in pharmaceutical production.

Optimal Combination of Mixing Units Using the Design of Experiments Method

Makhsuda Juraeva et al.

Summary: A passive micromixer was developed by combining two mixing units to achieve optimal mixing performance. Different combination schemes showed significant effects on mixing performance at different Reynolds numbers, with the general combination scheme demonstrating the best mixing performance throughout the micromixer. The order of combination became less significant after three combination units.
