Controlling Asymmetric Retroreflection of Metasurfaces via Localized Loss Engineering

Min Li et al.

Summary: Metasurfaces based on subwavelength resonators can manipulate the flow of light at optical interfaces. In this study, the concept of localized loss engineering in electromagnetic metasurfaces is proposed, showing that introducing absorptive defects in local regions can switch an ordinary symmetric retroreflector to an extraordinary asymmetric one. The metasurface exhibits extremely asymmetric performance at the exceptional point without the need for deeply discretized subwavelength elements. The localized loss-assisted asymmetric reflection is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies.

Exceptions points with memory in a microcavity Brillouin laser

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: This study experimentally observes two distinct exceptional points (EPs) with opposite hermiticities and demonstrates a parity-time phase transition with exotic memory effects near the EPs in a nonlinear and non-Hermitian system. The nonlinear self-phase modulation effectively alters the EP location and results in a bistable memory effect. The two EPs with opposite hermiticities in the same system exhibit distinct behaviors in this memory effect.

Self-induced transparency in a perfectly absorbing chiral second-harmonic generator

Jiankun Hou et al.

Summary: In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a self-induced transparency effect in a perfectly absorbing optical microcavity, where a portion of waves can be transmitted at higher power due to the nonlinear coupling between the fundamental and second harmonic modes. The asymmetric scattering nature of the microcavity enables chiral and unidirectional reflection, allowing for asymmetric and chiral coherent control of the perfect absorption states through phase varying. Moreover, chiral behaviors also empower the chiral emission of second-harmonic generation with a high distinct ratio in the transparency state.

Exceptional Points as Lasing Prethresholds

Alexander A. Zyablovsky et al.

Summary: The evolution of lasing as a hybrid eigenstates comprised of electromagnetic modes and atomic polarization is discussed. A special hybrid state is formed before coherent generation at the laser threshold, characterized by enhanced coupling among excited atoms and electromagnetic modes. This ultimately leads to lasing, transitioning into the single-mode regime above the lasing prethreshold.

Room-temperature polaritonic non-Hermitian system with single microcavity

Hyun Gyu Song et al.

Summary: Researchers demonstrated room-temperature polaritonic parity-time-reversal symmetry by coupling exciton-polariton modes to one another in a six-fold symmetric microcavity with loss modulation. This direct coupling led to a phase transition from unbroken to broken symmetry, revealing the lowest threshold of polariton condensates in non-Hermitian degeneracies despite increasing loss.

Plasmonic topological metasurface by encircling an exceptional point

Qinghua Song et al.

Summary: By exploiting the topological features of non-Hermitian matrices near singular points, an additional degree of freedom was introduced to address optical phase engineering in optical metasurfaces. Choosing metasurface building blocks to encircle a singularity allowed for the engineered full 2π-phase on a specific reflected polarization channel with topological protection. The ease of implementation and compatibility with other phase-addressing mechanisms demonstrate the industrial applicability of topological properties in metasurface technology at optical frequencies.

Multifunctional metasurfaces enabled by simultaneous and independent control of phase and amplitude for orthogonal polarization states

Mingze Liu et al.

Summary: Monochromatic light has three fundamental properties: amplitude, phase, and polarization. A versatile transmission-mode all-dielectric metasurface platform is proposed in this work, capable of independently manipulating the phase and amplitude for two orthogonal states of polarization in the visible frequency range, enabling various light-field manipulation capabilities. This technology opens new possibilities in polarization optics, information encoding, and optical data storage.
