Photonic (computational) memories: tunable nanophotonics for data storage and computing

Chuanyu Lian et al.

Summary: Photonic memories, combining photonics with information storage, have the potential to provide energy-efficient, fast, and high-bandwidth data processing, overcoming the von Neumann bottleneck and reducing energy wastage. Although photonic memories have lower storage density compared to electronic digital counterparts, their analog nature and ultrahigh bandwidth make them ideal for unconventional computing strategies.

A review of tunable photonics: Optically active materials and applications from visible to terahertz

Joo Hwan Ko et al.

Summary: The development of photonics has entered a new stage, where reconfigurable platforms with tunable functions are used to achieve versatile applications. Recent research has focused on integrating optically active materials into photonic platforms to dynamically control optical properties. This review explores the potential uses of tunable photonics in five application areas: structural coloration, metasurface for flat optics, photonic memory, thermal radiation, and terahertz plasmonics, and provides guidelines for designing tunable photonics based on wavelength characteristics.

Microcavity platform for widely tunable optical double resonance

Sigurd Flagan et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates precise control of the absolute frequency and frequency difference between two resonator modes in Fabry-Perot microcavities by incorporating a diamond micromembrane with a small thickness gradient. The double-resonance enhancement of nonlinear optical processes is achieved by tuning the mirror separation and diamond thickness, allowing for a wide frequency range for pump laser tuning.

Microresonator devices lithographically introduced at the optical fiber surface

N. Toropov et al.

Summary: A simple lithographic method for fabricating microresonator devices at the optical fiber surface is presented. By using a CO2 laser to remove the polymer coating and etching the fiber in hydrofluoric acid solution, a chain of silica bottle microresonators with nanoscale radius variation is created. The method allows for larger fiber radius variation compared to previous approaches in SNAP technology.
