Summary: The concept of Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) has evolved from describing the curvilinear propagation of sound waves to include continuous reflection of light waves for interferometric sensing. WGM resonators, based on glass microspheres, microtoroids, microcapillaries and silicon microrings, use multiple-cavity passes for sensitive measurements. The applications cover in vivo and single-molecule sensing, gyroscopes and microcavity quantum electrodynamics, with various sensing mechanisms employed.
