Theory and practice of Bayesian and frequentist frameworks for network meta-analysis

Behnam Sadeghirad et al.

Summary: Network meta-analysis (NMA) is a statistical method used to synthesize evidence for comparing the benefits and harms of multiple treatments. Bayesian and frequentist frameworks are commonly used, with Bayesian models being more flexible but requiring additional assumptions and statistical expertise. This paper discusses the theoretical aspects of Bayesian and frequentist models for NMA, as well as the applications and considerations of contrast-synthesis and arm-synthesis NMAs. Simulation and empirical studies show that there are rarely important differences in the results of Bayesian and frequentist approaches, suggesting that network meta-analysts should focus on model features rather than the statistical framework.

Development and design validation of a novel network meta-analysis presentation tool for multiple outcomes: a qualitative descriptive study

Mark R. Phillips et al.

Summary: This study developed a presentation method that effectively summarizes network meta-analysis (NMA) results. Through iterative modifications, the presentation format was improved for clarity and ease of interpretation. Two preferred presentation versions were identified and a legend was developed to facilitate interpretation.

Probiotics for Preventing Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Preterm Infants: A Network Meta-Analysis

Isadora Beghetti et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis on the role of probiotics in preventing NEC in preterm infants, demonstrating that B. lactis Bb-12/B94 could reduce the risk of NEC, with a different size effect according to feeding type. Further trials are needed to confirm these findings.

GRADE guidelines 32: GRADE offers guidance on choosing targets of GRADE certainty of evidence ratings

Linan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study provides practical principles and examples to help GRADE users make optimal choices regarding their ratings of certainty of evidence using a minimally or partially contextualized approach. Systematic review and health technology assessment authors need to clarify their target of certainty rating, which depends on contextualization, thresholds, and estimate location. GRADE offers guidance for specifying the target of certainty of evidence rating.
