Polysialic acid-functionalized liposomes for efficient honokiol delivery to inhibit breast cancer growth and metastasis

Xin Li et al.

Summary: To enhance the anti-metastasis effects of honokiol (HNK) on breast cancer, researchers designed cationic liposomes encapsulating HNK and modified their surface with negatively charged polysialic acid (PSA-Lip-HNK). In vitro experiments showed that PSA-Lip-HNK increased cellular uptake and cytotoxicity through the endocytosis pathway mediated by PSA and selectin receptors. In vivo experiments on tumor-bearing mice demonstrated that PSA-Lip-HNK effectively inhibited tumor growth and metastasis. Therefore, PSA-Lip-HNK provides a promising drug delivery approach for metastatic breast cancer therapy.

2D Piezoelectric BiVO4 Artificial Nanozyme with Adjustable Vanadium Vacancy for Ultrasound Enhanced Piezoelectric/Sonodynamic Therapy

Ruoxi Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a BiVO4 artificial nanozyme is developed with adjustable vanadium vacancy for ultrasound enhanced piezoelectric/sonodynamic therapy. Under ultrasound excitation, the vanadium vacancy-rich BiVO4 nanosheets facilitate the generation of a large number of electrons, improving the yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The introduction of cationic vacancy can improve the sonodynamic effect and the V-v-r BiVO4 nanosheets have better enzyme catalytic and glutathione depletion activities, leading to increased intracellular oxidative stress. This triple amplification strategy of oxidative stress induced by ultrasound inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

Ferric-loaded lipid nanoparticles inducing ferroptosis-like cell death for antibacterial wound healing

Ying Zhou et al.

Summary: Skin infection caused by bacterial proliferation in wounds is a major health issue. The abuse of antibiotics worldwide has made the battle against skin infection more difficult. Therefore, the development of new methods with different antibacterial mechanisms is urgently needed. In this study, ferric-loaded lipid nanoparticles (Fe-LNPs) were constructed, which effectively inhibited the growth of both Gram positive and negative strains, potentially through induction of ferroptosis-like cell death mechanisms. Fe-LNPs also showed effectiveness in inhibiting the proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus in a skin infection model and promoting wound healing. Fe-LNPs can be a powerful antibacterial formulation for future clinical application.
