Light axiodilatons: matter couplings, weak-scale completions and long-distance tests of gravity

Philippe Brax et al.

Summary: We consider the physical implications of very light axiodilatons motivated by a novel mechanism to reduce the vacuum energy. We address the two main problems concerning the light axiodilaton that appears in the low-energy limit. We show that eV scale axion decay constants need not be a problem and provide a solution using supersymmetric extra dimensions.

Axion homeopathy: screening dilaton interactions

C. P. Burgess et al.

Summary: This article proposes a new mechanism to evade the limitations on cosmologically active Brans-Dicke (or dilaton) scalar fields imposed by solar system tests of gravity. It utilizes the coupling between matter and a light axion to change how the fields respond to a gravitating source. The mechanism, called Axion Homeopathy, allows dilaton-matter couplings that would have been excluded to become acceptable when coupled with a small axion-matter coupling.

Yoga Dark Energy: natural relaxation and other dark implications of a supersymmetric gravity sector

C. P. Burgess et al.

Summary: We present a class of 4D 'yoga' models in which the gravitational response of heavy-particle vacuum energies is strongly suppressed. These models utilize a relaxation mechanism driven by a scalar field, non-linearly realized supersymmetric gravity coupled to the Standard Model, and approximate scale invariance expressed through a low-energy dilaton supermultiplet. The combination of these elements dramatically reduces the net vacuum-energy density. The models have implications for the electroweak hierarchy, Dark Energy, and Dark Matter.

RG-induced modulus stabilization: perturbative de Sitter vacua and improved D3-(D3)over-bar inflation

C. P. Burgess et al.

Summary: In this paper, we propose a new mechanism that adapts a perturbative method to stabilize moduli in string theory without leaving the domain of perturbative control. This mechanism relies on low-energy scaling symmetries and can robustly break supersymmetry and generate 4D de Sitter solutions. It also provides a dynamical explanation for the hierarchy between inflationary scales and late-time physical scales. We apply this mechanism to a specific scenario involving warped D3-brane inflation and show that it resolves the issue of the η-problem.

Lectures on the Swampland Program in String Compactifications

Marieke van Beest et al.

Summary: The Swampland program aims to determine the constraints that must be satisfied by an effective field theory to be consistent with a UV embedding in a quantum gravity theory. This article provides a pedagogical introduction to the most important Swampland conjectures, their connections, and their realization in string theory compactifications.
