Identification and quantification of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids in flowers of Rhododendron arboreum and evaluation of their antioxidant potential

Vinod Bhatt et al.

Summary: The current study investigated the anthocyanins, non-anthocyanins, and free radicals scavenging potential in the flowers of Rhododendron arboreum using UPLC-ion mobility quadrupole time of flight tandem mass spectrometry. A total of twenty-five constituents were identified, including nine anthocyanins, six phenolic acids, and ten flavonoids. The extracts showed high levels of total phenolics and anthocyanin content, as well as strong antioxidant properties. The findings suggest that the flowers of Rhododendron arboreum are a promising source of bioactive compounds and can be used as functional food and nutraceuticals.

Phytochemistry, Biological and Pharmacological Activities of the Anacyclus pyrethrum (L.) Lag: A Systematic Review

Hanane Elazzouzi et al.

Summary: Anacyclus pyrethrum is an important medicinal herb used in traditional medicine. Its roots are the most important parts used and contain antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds. It also has potential as an antidiabetic, insecticidal, and immunostimulatory agent. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between its traditional uses, phytochemistry, and toxicity, and clinical trials should be conducted to prove its efficacy.

Causes of blindness and vision impairment in 2020 and trends over 30 years, and prevalence of avoidable blindness in relation to VISION 2020: the Right to Sight: an analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study

Jaimie D. Steinmetz et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally from 1990 to 2020, finding that there was no change in the global prevalence of avoidable blindness and vision impairment in adults aged 50 and older. Although the age-standardized prevalence of avoidable blindness decreased, avoidable moderate and severe vision impairment did not change.

Summary: The translated paragraphs provide updated estimates on the global prevalence and number of people with diabetic retinopathy (DR) through 2045. The burden of DR is expected to increase disproportionately in countries in the Middle East and North Africa and the Western Pacific by 2045. Certain ethnic groups such as Hispanics and Middle Easterners with diabetes are more likely to have DR compared to Asians.

Aldose Reductase: a cause and a potential target for the treatment of diabetic complications

Sapna Thakur et al.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus leads to elevated glucose levels in the blood, causing overexpression of aldose reductase and subsequent complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy. Metabolic disorders related to glucose metabolism, such as sorbitol accumulation, overproduction of NADH, and excessive fructose production, are the main causes of diabetic pathogenesis and its complications.

Non-acidic bifunctional benzothiazole-based thiazolidinones with antimicrobial and aldose reductase inhibitory activity as a promising therapeutic strategy for sepsis

Antonios Kousaxidis et al.

Summary: A series of benzothiazole-based thiazolidinones were evaluated as potential inhibitors of aldose reductase, with compound 5 showing the most promising inhibitory activity. Molecular docking simulations provided insight into the binding mode of these compounds at the active site of human aldose reductase, and good membrane permeation and drug-likeness properties were predicted for the novel inhibitors according to Lipinski's rule of five.
