Are Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Risk Factors for Missed Acute Myocardial Infarction Diagnoses Among Chest Pain or Dyspnea Encounters in the Emergency Department?

Adam L. Sharp et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the association between mental health and/or substance use disorders and missed acute myocardial infarction diagnosis in the emergency department. The study found that patients with mental health disorders had a higher risk of missed diagnoses, especially those with a history of comorbid substance abuse. However, substance use disorders alone did not increase the risk of missed acute myocardial infarction in either cohort. The study also revealed challenges in prospectively identifying high-risk patients for improvement.

Sex Differences in Presentation of Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Mariam Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigated sex differences in the clinical presentation of acute stroke or transient ischemic attack. The results showed substantive differences in nonfocal and focal stroke symptoms between men and women. However, high-quality studies are lacking and more research is needed to address this issue.

Cerebrovascular disease hospitalizations following emergency department headache visits: A nested case-control study

Ava L. Liberman et al.

Summary: This study found that 0.6% of patients with emergency department visits for headaches were subsequently hospitalized for cerebrovascular disease, often at a different medical center. Patients with a history of stroke or neurosurgery prior to the visit may represent important opportunities for cerebrovascular disease prevention. Poor documentation of neurological examinations among cases suggests a potential need for improvement in emergency department processes.

Summary: The study estimated the age- and sex-standardized incidence of hospitalization for reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) in US adults to be approximately 3 cases per million per year. Many patients with RCVS had concomitant neurologic diagnoses, including subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, and intracerebral hemorrhage.
