Consolidation properties and structural alteration of Old Alluvium

Maria A. Nikolinakou et al.

Summary: Experimental observations and a conceptual model are presented to understand the compression and swelling characteristics of Old Alluvium from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The study describes breakdown of clay aggregates and cemented structure through high-pressure incremental consolidation tests, explaining changes in compression properties and significant swelling during unloading. These observations provide the basis for formulating a constitutive model to describe macroscopic compression and swelling behavior of the soil.

Evaluation of undrained shear strength of surficial marine clays using ball penetration-based CFD modelling

Xing-sen Guo et al.

Summary: The undrained shear strength of surficial marine clays is an important parameter for engineering construction and geological disaster assessment. The penetration resistance factor and dimensionless evaluation methods proposed in this study provide a theoretical basis for evaluating the strength of surficial marine clays, especially in considering the effect of ambient water. The computational fluid dynamics model and centrifugal penetration tests offer a comprehensive understanding of the penetration process and characteristics of marine clays, contributing to the exploration of empirical methods for surficial penetration.

Suitability of swelling and collapse theory proposed based on virgin compression surface

Asmaa Al-Taie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the swelling and collapse behavior of unsaturated soils using the modified MPK framework and a moisture content-based approach, validating its suitability. A new method was proposed to estimate the swelling-collapse state of samples without establishing the VCS.
