Suppression of distracting inputs by visual-spatial cues is driven by anticipatory alpha activity

Chenguang Zhao et al.

Summary: A study found that distracting inputs can be actively suppressed through spatial cues, nonspatial cues, or experience, which are controlled by multiple top-down mechanisms of attention. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the proactive suppression of distracting inputs guided by spatial distractor cues are still unknown. The study recorded electroencephalography signals from 110 participants to investigate the role of alpha activity in proactive distractor suppression induced by spatial cues and its influence on subsequent distractor inhibition.

A cortical cell ensemble in the posterior parietal cortex controls past experience-dependent memory updating

Akinobu Suzuki et al.

Summary: Animals refer to past experiences when processing current sensory inputs, and update previous memories through neural networks. This study reveals that a cellular ensemble in the posterior parietal cortex of mice interacts with the anterior cingulate cortex through a circuit to update memory by incorporating past and current information.

Brain Fingerprinting and Lie Detection: A Study of Dynamic Functional Connectivity Patterns of Deception Using EEG Phase Synchrony Analysis

Junfeng Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the brain functional connectivity patterns related to lie detection tasks using EEG signals. The results showed that deceptive responses elicited greater oscillatory synchronization than truthful responses between different brain regions. The findings suggest that these functional connections play a crucial role in executing lying tasks, involving visuo-spatial imagery, attention and memory systems, and attention and inhibition processing. The proposed method, FTRPS, demonstrated high classification accuracy for identifying deception behavior.

Effective Connectivity in Cortical Networks During Deception: A Lie Detection Study Based on EEG

Junfeng Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the communication between different brain areas during deception using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The results showed that it was possible to differentiate between guilty and innocent individuals by analyzing EEG signals in different frequency bands. The fronto-parietal network was found to play a key role in deception. This study contributes to our understanding of the cognitive processes and mechanisms underlying deception.

Utilizing the Activation-Decision-Construction-Action Theory to predict children's hypothetical decisions to deceive

Joshua Wyman et al.

Summary: The cost-benefit formula of ADCAT can effectively predict children's hypothetical decisions to tell certain types of lies, including selfish lies and lies for others when there is a personal cost. The expected value of telling the truth was related to lower willingness to tell hypothetical lies, but the expected value of lying was not related to children's hypothetical decisions. Developmental factors and the type of lie being analyzed can affect the effectiveness of the cost-benefit formula in predicting children's lying behavior.

Alpha Oscillations Shape Sensory Representation and Perceptual Sensitivity

Ying Joey Zhou et al.

Summary: This study found that decreasing prestimulus alpha power in the occipital-parietal areas can improve perceptual sensitivity and increase the amount of decodable information from neural activity patterns, indicating that alpha band dynamics modulate sensory signals of interest more strongly than noise.

Neural mechanisms of deliberate dishonesty: Dissociating deliberation from other control processes during dishonest behaviors

Liyang Sai et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have found that cognitive control during honest and dishonest behaviors may not only be required for deliberate actions, but also for motivated dishonest behaviors. A study across 58 neuroimaging studies suggests that brain regions previously implicated in dishonesty may reflect more general cognitive mechanisms. This challenges the view that cognitive control is a hallmark of dishonesty.

Hierarchical Neural Prediction of Interpersonal Trust

Yiwen Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that during the trust generation stage, higher frontocentral beta band activity related to cognitive inhibition was associated with trust choices at both item level and individual level. Additionally, frontocentral beta band oscillation after reciprocity feedback had a stronger predictive effect on trust choices compared to betrayal feedback and distrust choices.

Analysis of Functional Brain Network in MDD Based on Improved Empirical Mode Decomposition With Resting State EEG Data

Xuexiao Shao et al.

Summary: This study proposed a network decomposition model based on Improved EMD for time-frequency analysis of brain functional network in major depressive disorder (MDD). The results showed that Improved EMD decomposed IMFs were more stable, and the changes in MDD functional connectivity on different IMFs were related to pathological changes, providing potential biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. Additionally, significant differences between MDD and normal controls were found in three network metrics, confirming the aberrant brain network structure of MDD in hubs characteristics.
