The role of microRNAs in responses to drought and heat stress in peanut (Arachis hypogaea)

Meenakshi Mittal et al.

Summary: We explored the space of miRNAs and phasiRNAs associated with drought and heat stresses in peanut, using computational analysis of leaf sRNA library and publicly available datasets. We identified novel and conserved families of MIRNAs and provided evidence of their cleavage activities on mRNA targets. We also found inverse correlations between differentially expressed drought- and heat-regulated miRNAs and target mRNA expressions. Meta-analysis and over representation analysis suggested unique functions of miRNAs in peanut gynophore development. The genome-wide MIRNA annotation of the published peanut genome can facilitate molecular breeding of valuable traits.

Summary: The study demonstrates the important role of Arabidopsis ORANGE (AtOR) in regulating ABA-dependent adaptive response to drought stress. Overexpression of AtOR significantly enhances drought tolerance in Arabidopsis by regulating the expression of ABA- and stress-responsive genes. The subcellular localization of AtOR protein in chloroplasts suggests its involvement in drought stress response pathways.

Sugar signal mediates flavonoid biosynthesis in tea leaves

Yi-Qing Lv et al.

Summary: Sugar metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis in tea leaves vary during development. This study conducted a transcriptomic analysis of tea leaves at different maturity stages and identified key gene modules and hub genes related to the relationship between sugar metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis. Transcription factors in these gene modules were mainly enriched in the plant hormone signal transduction pathway. Further experiments demonstrated the involvement of certain transcription factors in the sugar-induced regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis and identified a target gene for flavonoid biosynthesis. These findings provide new insights into the crosstalk between sugar metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis in tea plants.

Abiotic stress-induced anthocyanins in plants: Their role in tolerance to abiotic stresses

Aung Htay Naing et al.

Summary: Abiotic stresses such as heat, drought, salinity, low temperature, and heavy metals negatively impact plant growth and productivity. Plants respond to these stresses by producing anthocyanins, which help scavenge excess ROS and enhance stress tolerance. This review discusses the mechanisms of how anthocyanins respond to abiotic stress and protect plants, as well as the development of transgenic plants enriched in anthocyanins for increased stress tolerance.

Superoxide is promoted by sucrose and affects amplitude of circadian rhythms in the evening

Angela Roman et al.

Summary: Plants need to coordinate photosynthetic metabolism with the daily environment and biological rhythms, which are driven by circadian clocks adjusting to environmental cues. Sugars play a crucial role in providing metabolic feedback to the circadian oscillator, while the presence of superoxide (O-2(-)) is essential for transcriptional control in response to sugar and growth. This study reveals the significance of O-2(-) as a metabolic signal affecting the transcriptional control of the circadian oscillator in Arabidopsis.
