Asymmetric effects between tree and understorey litters on mixed litter decomposition in temperate Quercus variabilis forest

Yanchun Liu et al.

Summary: The mutual effects between different functional type plants in mixed litters during decomposition were found to have asymmetric impacts on nutrient release. The presence of one species in the mixture influenced the nutrient release of other species, highlighting the importance of species-specific effects in leaf litter mixing experiments.

Leaf Functional Traits of Two Species Affected by Nitrogen Addition Rate and Period Not Nitrogen Compound Type in a Meadow Grassland

Lu Sun et al.

Summary: The plasticity of plant functional traits is crucial for plant growth and survival under changing climate. This study found that the type of nitrogen compounds and the duration of nitrogen application did not have a significant effect on leaf functional traits. However, nitrogen addition significantly increased leaf total nitrogen content and specific leaf area, while decreasing leaf total phosphorus content and leaf dry matter content. Long-term nitrogen addition further increased leaf total nitrogen and phosphorus content, specific leaf area, and plant height, but decreased leaf dry matter content. Additionally, the two species differed in their response to nitrogen addition, as the total nitrogen and phosphorus content of Thermopsis lanceolata consistently exceeded that of Leymus chinensis.

Nitrogen but not phosphorus addition affects symbiotic N2 fixation by legumes in natural and semi-natural grasslands located on four continents

Eduardo Vazquez et al.

Summary: The results reveal that soil nitrogen enrichment caused by anthropogenic activities significantly reduces symbiotic nitrogen fixation in grasslands, mainly by reducing the biomass of legumes rather than altering the symbiotic nitrogen fixation per unit legume biomass. These effects cannot be reversed by additional phosphorus amendment.

The influence of increased precipitation and nitrogen deposition on the litter decomposition and soil microbial community structure in a semiarid grassland

ZhaoLin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated how increased precipitation and nitrogen deposition affect litter decomposition processes in semiarid grassland ecosystems through litter quality and soil microbial communities. The results showed that water and nitrogen additions had different effects on litter decomposition pathways and outcomes, with water addition directly promoting litter decomposition and nitrogen addition indirectly promoting it through improving litter quality and increasing bacterial and fungal ratios. Water and nitrogen additions also had antagonistic effects on litter decomposition. Litter quality and the soil bacterial to fungal ratio were identified as important factors controlling litter decomposition.

Long-term nitrogen addition alters peatland plant community structure and nutrient resorption efficiency

Siqi Gao et al.

Summary: Peatlands, as a carbon and nitrogen pool in the world, are highly sensitive to environmental changes. This study examined the effects of nitrogen addition on the growth characteristics, community structure, and nutrient dynamics of peatland plants in a permafrost area. The results showed that nitrogen addition could affect the plant community structure by influencing plant growth characteristics. Furthermore, long-term nitrogen addition could alleviate nitrogen limitation to some extent but exacerbate phosphorus limitation.

The response of soil respiration to different N compounds addition in a saline-alkaline grassland of northern China

Huajie Diao et al.

Summary: The increase in atmospheric nitrogen deposition has significant effects on soil respiration, but the responses to different nitrogen compounds in saline-alkaline grasslands are unclear. A 3-year field experiment in a saline-alkaline grassland in northern China showed that nitrogen addition had a significant effect on soil respiration, with varying effects among different years and related to seasonal precipitation.

Increasing rates of long-term nitrogen deposition consistently increased litter decomposition in a semi-arid grassland

Shuang-Li Hou et al.

Summary: Continuing nitrogen deposition accelerates litter decomposition by increasing soil manganese availability, lowering soil pH, reducing soil C : N ratios, and subsequently increasing bacterial to fungal ratios. Multiple factors contribute to higher rates of litter decomposition in response to nitrogen deposition.

Physiological Responses of Robinia pseudoacacia and Quercus acutissima Seedlings to Repeated Drought-Rewatering Under Different Planting Methods

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: Climate change has led to uneven water distribution, alternating between drought and rewetting, negatively impacting plant species. Research shows that repeated drought-rewatering can induce stress imprint and compensatory mechanisms in plants, while mixed planting can weaken drought inhibition and enhance overall drought resistance.

Responses and drivers of leaf nutrients and resorption to nitrogen enrichment across northern China's grasslands: A meta-analysis

Yuan Su et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis revealed that N enrichment significantly altered the concentrations and stoichiometry of N and P in plant foliage, as well as nutrient resorption efficiency. These effects were influenced by N addition rates, humidity index, and the ratio of N addition rates to ambient N deposition. The findings suggest that ambient N deposition indirectly impacts plant internal nutrient cycling in grasslands of northern China.

Negative effects of nitrogen override positive effects of phosphorus on grassland legumes worldwide

Pedro M. Tognetti et al.

Summary: Nitrogen addition decreases the abundance and diversity of legumes in grasslands, especially in nitrogen-poor soils, while increasing the cover of non-nitrogen fixing plants. The addition of phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients can enhance the abundance of legumes, but does not counteract the negative effects of nitrogen addition.
