A comparison of phenotypic variation in Triticum durum Desf. genotypes deposited in gene banks based on the shape and color descriptors of kernels in a digital image analysis

Elzbieta Suchowilska et al.

Summary: This study compared phenotypic variation of different origin T. durum accessions with contemporary spring cultivars. The analyzed materials showed considerable variation in phenotypic traits and can be valuable for durum wheat breeding. They exhibited higher protein content, wet gluten content, Zeleny sedimentation values, and flour strength compared to reference cultivars. However, they also had lower yields and undesirable grain color. The findings suggest that color parameters can be used to select high-quality breeding material.

Genome Wide Association Study Uncovers the QTLome for Osmotic Adjustment and Related Drought Adaptive Traits in Durum Wheat

Giuseppe Emanuele Condorelli et al.

Summary: Osmotic adjustment (OA) is an important component of drought resistance in crops, but the genetic basis of OA in wheat and other crops is still largely unknown. This study found high repeatability of OA and a strong positive correlation with leaf relative water content under severe drought conditions in durum wheat. Genome-wide association study revealed significant QTLs for OA and major QTL hotspots on chromosome arms associated with beneficial effects on water status. Comparisons with previous field trials showed concurrent effects on plant health and yield. These findings support the use of OA as a valuable marker-assisted selection for enhancing drought resistance in wheat.

Intra- and Inter-Population Genetic Diversity of Russello and Timilia Landraces from Sicily: A Proxy towards the Identification of Favorable Alleles in Durum Wheat

Francesca Taranto et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the genetic variation patterns of two large germplasm collections of Timilia and Russello durum wheat landraces using SNP genotyping. The results showed that there are two genetic groups of Russello associated with different geographical areas in Sicily, which differ in important traits related to gluten quality and adaptation. Meanwhile, Timilia landraces have undergone conservative selection despite their wide genetic variation, likely associated with their distinctive traits. This study provides a foundation for further exploration of the genetic diversity in Sicilian landraces and emphasizes the importance of considering intra-population genetic diversity when registering conservation varieties in national crop registers.

The study of genetic diversity in a minicore collection of durum wheat genotypes using agro-morphological traits and molecular markers

N. Shaygan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the genetic and phenotypic diversity of 96 durum wheat genotypes using CBDP and ISSR markers. It found that CBDP markers were more effective in detecting genetic diversity, and different patterns of interaction among genotypes based on traits were observed, indicating a high level of diversity among the studied accessions.

Molecular Diversity within a Mediterranean and European Panel of Tetraploid Wheat (T. turgidum subsp.) Landraces and Modern Germplasm Inferred Using a High-Density SNP Array

Paola Ganugi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity and population genetic structure of eight tetraploid Triticum turgidum L. subspecies using high-density SNP molecular markers. The findings provided a clear picture of the population structure within a collection of tetraploid wheats and highlighted the genetic potential of landraces and wild relatives for specific traits of interest. This research contributes significantly to future phenotyping and crossing activities, particularly for developing durum wheat composite cross populations adapted to Mediterranean conditions.

Polyphenol oxidase genes as integral part of the evolutionary history of domesticated tetraploid wheat

Francesca Taranto et al.

Summary: Studying the genetic basis of polyphenol oxidases (PPO) related traits is crucial for crop genetic improvement. By analyzing a tetraploid wheat collection using 90K wheat SNP iSelect assay, 23 marker-trait associations related to PPO activity were detected, and two haplotypes associated with low and high PPO activity were identified. A reliable marker for marker assisted selection was developed, and genetic divergence between T. turgidum subspecies was evaluated using the detected associations.

Physical mapping of QTL associated with agronomic and end-use quality traits in spring wheat under conventional and organic management systems

Kassa Semagn et al.

Summary: This study identified 152 QTL and 22 QTL hotspots associated with nine agronomic and end-use quality traits in spring wheat populations. Two QTL with major effects were consistently detected in all environments, providing a strong foundation for further characterization and possibly cloning. The physical positions of these QTL offer valuable information for marker development and comparison across independent studies.
