Pyramiding of Four Broad Spectrum Bacterial Blight Resistance Genes in Cross Breeds of Basmati Rice

Irfan Ullah et al.

Summary: Pyramiding four broad spectrum BB-R genes (Xa4, xa5, xa13 and Xa21) in Basmati-385 background was conducted to obtain drought tolerance and desirable grain traits while having durable resistance against bacterial blight. Line 23 with quadruplet R genes and lines 8, 16, 21, 27, and 28 with triplet R genes were found to have the highest level of resistance. Replicated yield and resistance trials are recommended before releasing these lines as new rice varieties.

Genetic Improvement of Rice for Bacterial Blight Resistance: Present Status and Future Prospects

R. Abdul Fiyaz et al.

Summary: The production and productivity of rice is challenged by biotic and abiotic factors, including bacterial blight disease. Utilizing host plant resistance to breed disease-resistant varieties is the most effective strategy. Marker-assisted breeding has played a key role in identifying and utilizing resistance genes to develop rice varieties resistant to bacterial blight.

Development of Broad Spectrum and Durable Bacterial Blight Resistant Variety through Pyramiding of Four Resistance Genes in Rice

Kartik Chandra Pradhan et al.

Summary: Marker-assisted backcross breeding was used to pyramid four resistance genes for bacterial blight disease in a popular rice variety. Through foreground and background selection, a total of eight plants carrying all the target genes were obtained in the backcross generations. The pyramided lines showed high resistance to the disease and were similar to the recipient parent in multiple morpho-quality traits.

Intra-regional diversity of rice bacterial blight pathogen,Xanthomonas oryzaepv.oryzae, in the Andaman Islands, India: revelation by pathotyping and multilocus sequence typing

K. Sakthivel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic and pathogenic variability of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae causing bacterial blight in rice on the remote Andaman Islands. Results showed the presence of seven pathotypes distributed in two clonal complexes, indicating trans-boundary movement and consequent diversification of the bacterial pathogen. The study emphasizes the importance of multi-gene pyramiding for durable disease resistance and establishing stringent quarantine measures for safeguarding island agricultural practices in the future.
