The role of nanomaterials in enhancing natural product translational potential and modulating endoplasmic reticulum stress in the treatment of ovarian cancer

Rajeev K. Singla et al.

Summary: Ovarian cancer, especially epithelial ovarian carcinoma, is a dangerous malignant tumor in females. Phytochemicals have shown potential in combating ovarian cancer by targeting endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Misfolded proteins in the ER lumen result in ER stress in ovarian cancer, disrupting physiological processes and increasing apoptosis. Several phytochemicals, including resveratrol, quercetin, curcumin, fucosterol, cleistopholine, fucoidan, and epicatechin gallate, have shown inhibitory effects against ER stress. Studying and comparing the chemical features of these compounds can aid in drug design and combination therapy. Additionally, formulations such as nanoparticles and liposomes based on curcumin and quercetin have been explored for ovarian cancer treatment. Further translational and clinical research is necessary to fully understand the potential of phytochemicals in targeting the genetic mechanisms of ovarian cancer.
