Linking Multi-Omics to Wheat Resistance Types to Fusarium Head Blight to Reveal the Underlying Mechanisms

Fan Wu et al.

Summary: Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum is a destructive disease for wheat production, and the resistance mechanism is complex with different types of resistances. Studying the resistance mechanism of FHB in wheat using multi-omics methods can help identify critical genes or pathways and improve FHB resistance in wheat breeding programs.

Genetic architecture of fusarium head blight disease resistance and associated traits in Nordic spring wheat

Vinay Kumar Reddy Nannuru et al.

Summary: This study identified several QTL associated with FHB disease resistance in a panel of spring wheat. The research found a highly significant QTL on chromosome 7A that played a consistent role in FHB resistance. The findings provide valuable information for breeders to improve FHB resistance in wheat cultivars.

The effect of the Rht1 haplotype on Fusarium head blight resistance in relation to type and level of background resistance and in combination with Fhb1 and Qfhs.ifa-5A

Maria Buerstmayr et al.

Summary: The effect of the Rht1 genes on Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance in wheat depends on anther extrusion and background resistance level. Semi-dwarfing alleles decrease FHB resistance while Qfhs.ifa-5A increases resistance and anther extrusion. The major FHB resistance gene Fhb1 does not affect anther retention (AR), but Qfhs.ifa-5A enhances AR in both tall and dwarf haplotypes.

Genome-Wide Association Studies for Fusarium Head Blight Resistance and Its Trade-Off With Grain Yield in Soft Red Winter Wheat

Rupesh Gaire et al.

Summary: This study identified 25 genomic regions associated with five FHB-related traits in a soft red winter wheat breeding population through genome-wide association studies. Individuals with favorable alleles at specific loci showed better resistance scores. While pyramiding multiple loci provides protection against FHB disease, it comes with a significant trade-off with grain yield.
