Cell wall modifications by α-XYLOSIDASE1 are required for control of seed and fruit size in Arabidopsis

Maurizio Di Marzo et al.

Summary: Modification of the cell wall is crucial for plant development, and xyloglucan degradation plays an important role in regulating cell growth. This study demonstrates that the alpha-XYLOSIDASE1 (XYL1) gene, regulated by the transcription factor SEEDSTICK, is essential for seed and fruit development. XYL1 affects seed size, germination, and fruit elongation, highlighting the importance of cell wall modulation in shaping organs.

miR319-Regulated TCP3 Modulates Silique Development Associated with Seed Shattering in Brassicaceae

Biting Cao et al.

Summary: Seed shattering is an undesirable trait that leads to crop yield loss. This study found that miR319-targeted TCPs inhibit the elongation and dehiscence of post-fertilized fruits (silique) by regulating FUL expression. FUL acts downstream of TCP3 to negatively regulate silique development, and over-activation of TCP3 enhances silique resistance to shattering. These findings provide a potential target for reducing seed shattering in Brassica crops.

A lignified-layer bridge controlled by a single recessive gene is associated with high pod-shatter resistance in Brassica napus L.

Wen Chu et al.

Summary: In this study, an elite line OR88 with strong shatter resistance and a lignified-layer bridge (LLB) structure was identified in rapeseed. The LLB structure was controlled by a single recessive gene and the gene responsible for LLB was identified as BnTCP8.009. Genetic markers linked to the candidate gene were developed. This finding provides valuable insights for the development of shatter-resistant rapeseed cultivars.

Down-regulation of MANNANASE7 gene in Brassica napus L. enhances silique dehiscence-resistance

Yu-Long Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that dehiscence-resistance in rapeseed can be manipulated by altering the expression of the hemicellulase gene BnMAN7A07, providing a potential genetic resource for breeding practice.
