The good, the bad, and the phosphate: regulation of beneficial and detrimental plant-microbe interactions by the plant phosphate status

Michael Paries et al.

Summary: Phosphate is vital for life, but it is poorly accessible for sessile land plants. To overcome this limitation, plants have developed various strategies for enhanced acquisition and recycling of phosphate. These strategies involve a conserved phosphate starvation response (PSR) system, as well as interactions with mycorrhiza fungi and other microbes. The PSR pathway not only regulates phosphate uptake but also influences plant immunity and can be manipulated by microbes.

Differences in ionomic responses to nutrient deficiencies among plant species under field conditions

Toshihiro Watanabe et al.

Summary: This study examined the ionomic responses to nutrient deficiency in wheat, maize, sunflower, and soybean. Different plant species showed specific and nonspecific accumulation changes in response to deficiency of phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen. Sunflower exhibited distinct variations in ionome profile under phosphorus deficiency, while all plant species showed increased accumulation of many elements under potassium deficiency. Increased leaf molybdenum accumulation in non-leguminous plants under nitrogen deficiency suggests a potential unknown role of molybdenum in metabolic responses.

Oak Decline Caused by Biotic and Abiotic Factors in Central Europe: A Case Study from the Czech Republic

Marketa Machacova et al.

Summary: This study investigated biotic factors in declining oak stands in the Czech Republic, finding that subcortical insects and fungal pathogens influence the oak decline process, with some insect species transmitting spores of tracheomycotic pathogens. Ophiostoma fungi were detected in all stands, while Phytophthora pathogens were only found in one stand.

Specificity and Plasticity of the Functional Ionome of Brassica napus and Triticum aestivum Subjected to Macronutrient Deprivation

Galatea Courbet et al.

Summary: The composition of the functional ionome in Brassica napus and Triticum aestivum under macronutrient deprivation was studied. It was found that plant growth remained similar to controls after 10 days of deprivation, possibly due to remobilization of nutrients from roots or old leaves. Multiple interactions were revealed, some of which were common to both species while others were species specific, with some new interactions discovered and proposed mechanisms for their action.

Specificity and Plasticity of the Functional Ionome of Brassica napus and Triticum aestivum Exposed to Micronutrient or Beneficial Nutrient Deprivation and Predictive Sensitivity of the Ionomic Signatures

Aurelien D'Oria et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the specific variation in the functional ionome in Brassica napus and Triticum aestivum plants subjected to micronutrient or beneficial mineral nutrient deprivation, revealing numerous interactions between elements. It was found that deficiencies in certain beneficial nutrients can strongly modify the plant ionome, highlighting the importance of these elements in plant functioning.

Interactions of Silicon With Essential and Beneficial Elements in Plants

Jelena Pavlovic et al.

Summary: Silicon, while not essential for plants, has been shown to have beneficial effects in various species and environmental conditions, including low nutrient availability. It has the potential to increase nutrient availability in the rhizosphere and root uptake through complex mechanisms, and may play a role in transcriptional regulation of element transporters for nutrient acquisition and tissue homeostasis.
