From Recharge, to Groundwater, to Discharge Areas in Aquifer Systems in Quebec (Canada): Shaping of Microbial Diversity and Community Structure by Environmental Factors

Karine Villeneuve et al.

Summary: Groundwater recharge and discharge rates and zones have a significant impact on the microbial community of aquifer systems. This study used gene sequencing to analyze the microbial composition in various aquifers and found distinct community variations between different geological characteristics. The study also revealed little contribution from surface recharge to groundwater communities and vice versa, highlighting the need for further in-depth temporal studies to understand the connectivity between surface and subsurface microbiomes.

Carbon fixation rates in groundwater similar to those in oligotrophic marine systems

Will A. Overholt et al.

Summary: The terrestrial subsurface contains most freshwater reserves and prokaryotic biomass. A study estimated carbon fixation rates in a carbonate aquifer using a C-14-labelling technique and found similarities to those in oligotrophic marine surface waters. The study suggests the importance of in situ carbon fixation in subsurface ecosystem processes.

Ecological processes differ in community assembly of Archaea, Bacteria and Eukaryotes in a biogeographical survey of groundwater habitats in the Quebec region (Canada)

Benjamin Groult et al.

Summary: Aquifers are inhabited by microorganisms from the three major domains of life: Archaea, Eukaryotes and Bacteria. This study conducted a spatial analysis of the distribution of microorganisms in the Quebec region to understand the impact of geographic distance and water composition on microbial communities. The results showed that the assembly of microorganisms from these domains is primarily governed by stochastic mechanisms, highlighting the importance of considering their individual specificities.

Summary: A soil bacterium, designated XQ2(T), isolated from Lang Mountain in Hunan province, P. R. China, is proposed as a novel species of the genus Hyphomicrobium and named Hyphomicrobium album sp. nov. based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics. The type strain is XQ2(T) (= KCTC 82378(T) = CCTCC AB 2020178(T)), and the genus description is emended.

Heterologous expression of a novel serine palmitoyltransferase from Sphingobium chungbukense

Hyun-Ju Um et al.

Summary: In the described experiments, a novel serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) gene was identified and cloned from S. chungbukense KCTC2955, with successful overexpression in E. coli. The study provides insights into the reaction mechanism of SPT in bacteria, with a focus on the genus Sphingobium.
