Nutrients and not temperature are the key drivers for cyanobacterial biomass in the Americas

Sylvia Bonilla et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial blooms pose a threat to freshwater use globally and present challenges for water management. While high temperatures and nutrient concentrations are believed to trigger blooms, the roles of nitrogen and phosphorus are still debated. This study analyzed data from lakes across a vast geographic range and found that phosphorus was the primary resource explaining cyanobacterial biomass, while temperature had a weak relationship. Shallow lakes were found to be more vulnerable to eutrophication.

The phyto-bacterioplankton couple in a shallow freshwater ecosystem: Who leads the dance?

Imen Louati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between bacterioplankton composition and phytoplankton dynamics in a shallow lake known for recurrent cyanobacterial blooms. Changes in bacterial community occurred before the development of the phytoplankton bloom, suggesting that the environmental changes were first sensed by the bacterial community. The study also highlighted the relevance of spatial organization within different microenvironments in shaping these communities.

Present and future potential role of toxin-producing Synechococcus in the tropical region

Zhi Yang Sim et al.

Summary: As anthropogenic induced temperature rises and nutrient loadings increase, the ecological function of the phytoplankton community is expected to favour the picocyanobacteria, particularly Synechococcus. This study examines the responses of a novel toxin-producing Synechococcus to environmental changes that reflect climate change effects. The findings highlight the significant variations in cell abundance, growth rate, death rate, cellular stoichiometry and toxin production of Synechococcus under different temperature and nutrient conditions.

Comparing microscopy and DNA metabarcoding techniques for identifying cyanobacteria assemblages across hundreds of lakes

Paul W. MacKeigan et al.

Summary: Accurate identification of species in an ecosystem is crucial for lake managers and bioassessment programs, especially when monitoring cyanobacteria. DNA-based techniques like metabarcoding offer advantages over traditional light microscopy methods, and can be used to measure aquatic biodiversity more efficiently. A comparison of cyanobacteria assemblages generated by light microscopy and DNA metabarcoding from a dataset of 379 lakes revealed moderate congruence between the two methods at the order level, supporting the use of either method for monitoring eutrophication. The biggest difference between the methods was the detection of picocyanobacteria, which are often underestimated by light microscopy. This suggests that a combined-method strategy should be employed when monitoring trophic systems.

Heterotrophic Bacteria Dominate Catalase Expression during Microcystis Blooms

Summary: Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs) pose a global threat to freshwater ecosystems due to toxin production. This study reveals the key role of heterotrophic bacteria in decomposing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and suggests their activity may impact the fitness and strain composition of CHABs. The dichotomy of toxin-producing and non-toxin-producing strains may not drive the succession of toxin-producing species.

Host specificity of microbiome assembly and its fitness effects in phytoplankton

Sara L. Jackrel et al.

Summary: Insights into symbiosis between eukaryotic hosts and their microbiomes have led to a paradigm shift in understanding the factors influencing host fitness, ecology, and behavior. The study on phytoplankton as a model system demonstrates that microbiomes play a host-specific role and impact host fitness, with host factors being more influential than environmental factors in shaping microbiome composition. The temporal dynamics of microbiome composition and fitness effects emphasize the importance of host specificity in microbiome-host interactions.

Ciera Kinley-Baird et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of various USEPA-registered algaecides on microcystin-producing cyanobacteria from Lake Okeechobee through laboratory toxicity experiments. Results showed that certain formulations, particularly copper-based ones, had significant effects on the target cyanobacteria with reduced microcystin release and concentrations compared to untreated controls at different exposure times. These findings provide important data for decision-making and developing management strategies for water bodies impacted by harmful algal blooms.

Nitrogen form, concentration, and micronutrient availability affect microcystin production in cyanobacterial blooms

Nicole D. Wagner et al.

Summary: The study found that different nitrogen forms and micronutrient supply affect cyanobacteria biomass and cyanotoxin production. While high urea and MN conditions led to increased biomass and particulate N production in laboratory cultures, it also resulted in lower microcystin-LR concentrations. In community HABs, the addition of micronutrients resulted in higher microcystin-LA concentrations compared to non-MN amended community HABs.

Individual Microcystis colonies harbour distinct bacterial communities that differ by Microcystis oligotype and with time

Summary: The interactions between bacteria and phytoplankton in the phycosphere play a role in the development of harmful algal blooms. Microcystis, a cyanobacterium, grows in colonies with other bacteria, but the taxonomic composition of these communities and their interactions are not well characterized. The composition of Microcystis phycosphere communities is influenced by physiological differences between Microcystis strains, temporal changes in strain phenotypes, and the composition of seeding communities.

Metagenomic analysis of Raphidiopsis raciborskii microbiome: beyond the individual

Paula Vico et al.

Summary: Raphidiopsis raciborskii, a toxic cyanobacteria, has defined biogeographic patterns attributed to ecotypes generated by local environmental filters and phenotypic plasticity. Different ecotypes of R. raciborskii exhibit distinct microbiomes, with varying dominant taxa and metabolic capabilities for nitrogen acquisition, suggesting ecotype-specific microbiomes play a role in cyanobacterial niche adaptation. Additionally, there is a hypothesis that saxitoxin-producing R. raciborskii benefits from external nitrogen sources provided by microbiome bacteria.
