Niche partitioning of the ubiquitous and ecologically relevant NS5 marine group

Taylor Priest et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the species-level niche partitioning within the NS5 Marine Group by combining spatiotemporal dynamics and predicted substrate utilization. We identify depth as a key influencing factor in the distribution dynamics of NS5 species, and observe successional dynamics in relation to specialized substrate adaptations. Additionally, we provide a complete genome sequence and morphological insights for Arcticimaribacter forsetii AHE01FL, a candidate species within the NS5 group.

Bacterioplankton Diversity and Distribution in Relation to Phytoplankton Community Structure in the Ross Sea Surface Waters

Angelina Cordone et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial diversity in the surface waters of the Ross Sea in relation to phytoplankton community structure during the Austral summer 2017. The results showed partially overlapping bacterioplankton communities between the coastal waters and open waters, with dominant members belonging to Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. The study also revealed differences in phytoplankton biomass, bacterial groups, and environmental factors between the two locations.

The Prevalence of Arcobacteraceae in Aquatic Environments: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Igor Venancio et al.

Summary: This study used a systematic review and meta-analysis-based method to investigate the prevalence of Arcobacteraceae species in aquatic environments worldwide. The results revealed a high prevalence and wide distribution of Arcobacteraceae in different water bodies, posing a risk to human health. The study emphasizes the importance of identifying and managing sources of contamination and implementing preventive actions to reduce the burden of Arcobacteraceae family members.

The Physiology and Biogeochemistry of SUP05

Robert M. Morris et al.

Summary: The SUP05 glade of gammaproteobacteria plays a crucial role in the ocean ecosystem as both primary producers and primary consumers of organic carbon. They are important suppliers of carbon and nutrients for deep-sea eukaryotes and contribute significantly to the organic matter in seawater. This group utilizes osmolytes produced by phytoplankton for growth, and their presence is widespread in the ocean.

Microbial Biofilms Along a Geochemical Gradient at the Shallow-Water Hydrothermal System of Vulcano Island, Mediterranean Sea

Valentina Sciutteri et al.

Summary: Shallow water hydrothermal vents represent highly dynamic environments where strong geochemical gradients shape microbial communities. This study found that elevated CO2 concentrations causing low pH can affect the response of bacteria groups and taxa, while H2S proved to be a highly selective factor shaping the composition and affecting the diversity of the community.

Effect of tectonic processes on biosphere-geosphere feedbacks across a convergent margin

Katherine M. Fullerton et al.

Summary: This study suggests that bacterial communities in the subsurface across the Costa Rican margin are influenced by deep tectonic processes and may play a role in reducing carbon transfer to the mantle. Through chemolithoautotrophic bacteria fixing CO2 derived from subducted slabs, the subsurface ecosystem could potentially sequester a significant amount of carbon, impacting the geosphere.

Characterization and Diversity Analysis of the Extracellular Proteases of Thermophilic Anoxybacillus caldiproteolyticus 1A02591 From Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Sediment

Jun-Hui Cheng et al.

Summary: Protease-producing bacteria from marine deep-sea hydrothermal vents, such as Anoxybacillus caldiproteolyticus 1A02591, exhibited strong protease-secreting ability, particularly secreting thermophilic metalloproteases. The secreted proteases showed high activity at 70°C, mainly consisting of metalloproteases and serine proteases, indicating their role in organic nitrogen degradation in deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems.

Genomic and Physiological Characterization of Bacilli Isolated From Salt-Pans With Plant Growth Promoting Features

Claudia Petrillo et al.

Summary: The study identified salt-tolerant microbes with plant fitness-enhancing activities as potential plant growth-promoting bacteria. Whole-genome analysis revealed gene clusters with plant growth-promoting and biocontrol functions, along with novel secondary-metabolite biosynthetic genes, indicating potential beneficial impacts on plant growth and protection. This suggests a promising alternative to the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals in modern agriculture.

Marine ammonia-oxidising archaea and bacteria occupy distinct iron and copper niches

Roxana T. T. Shafiee et al.

Summary: Ammonia oxidation by archaea and bacteria in the oceans differs in response to trace metals iron and copper, with AOB having a greater affinity for unchelated Fe and AOA having a greater affinity and toxicity threshold for unchelated Cu. This study suggests that the success of AOB in shallower, euphotic waters may be due to their Fe affinity, while the greater success of AOA in the marine environment could be attributed to their Cu affinity. Further research is needed to explore the implications of trace metal availability on the dynamics of ammonia oxidation in the open ocean.
