Into the backyard: Multiple detections of PCV-2e in rural pig farms of Northern Italy. An unexpected ecological niche?

Giulia Faustini et al.

Summary: Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) is a burden for the swine industry, with genotypes PCV-2a, PCV-2b, and PCV-2d circulating worldwide. Recently, PCV-2e was detected for the first time in Europe, specifically in a breeding farm in Northeastern Italy. A molecular survey revealed that PCV-2e circulates only in pigs reared in backyard farms, while major genotypes are found in both rural and industrial farms. This study highlights the rural context as an ecological niche for PCV-2e circulation.

Porcine circovirus-2 in Africa: Identification of continent-specific clusters and evidence of independent viral introductions from Europe, North America and Asia

Giovanni Franzo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of PCV-2 in domestic pigs in multiple African countries, identifying four genotypes circulating in the continent. Phylogeographic analysis revealed African-specific clusters and estimated the introduction time of PCV-2s into Africa, highlighting the significant implications for pig production on the continent.

Reconstruction of the Evolutionary Origin, Phylodynamics, and Phylogeography of the Porcine Circovirus Type 3

Yongqiu Cui et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the evolutionary origin, phylodynamics, and phylogeography of porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) based on available complete genome sequences. It was found that PCV3 had a closer relationship with bird circovirus than with bat circovirus, but their common ancestor was bat circovirus. The earliest origin of PCV3 was traced back to 1907.53-1923.44, with a substitution rate of 3.104 x 10(-4) to 6.8524 x 10(-4) substitution/site/year. Malaysia was identified as the earliest location of the original PCV3, which then migrated to Asia, America, and Europe.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus dissemination across pig production systems in the United States

Manuel Jara et al.

Summary: This study found that PRRSV mainly spreads between farms of different production companies, leading to a decline in genetic diversity, while frequent external transmission still exists. Local dissemination primarily occurs through regular pig flow, but reverse transmission also exists, highlighting the importance of downstream farms as sources of the virus.

Summary: Researchers have developed a simple method, Contrast-FEL, for identifying specific sites within genes evolving differently in a phylogenetic tree. Through extensive simulations, they have shown that this method has high power and can effectively control false positive rates when the model is correctly specified.

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) Epidemiology in an Integrated Pig Company of Northern Italy: A Multilevel Threat Requiring Multilevel Interventions

Giovanni Franzo et al.

Summary: The epidemiology of Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome is influenced by multiple factors, including pig herd management, implementation of strict-independent pig flows, and environmental features. Small farms and rurally raised animals may pose a potential threat to larger, integrated companies. Therefore, a multidimensional approach ranging from individual herd management to collaboration and information sharing among different companies is necessary for effective infection control.

Summary: A study identified the presence of porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) in samples collected from commercial pigs and warthogs in Namibia for the first time, with the identification of genotype PCV-2c in warthogs being a novel finding.

Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV-3) as a causal agent of disease in swine and a proposal of PCV-3 associated disease case definition

Viviane Saporiti et al.

Summary: PCV-3 was discovered in 2015 and has been detected worldwide in pigs with various outcomes. While many studies suggest PCV-3 as a potential pathogen, strong evidence of its causality is still lacking, requiring further research to establish clear connections.
